She Loves Truth Week Nine Proverbs 25-27
Welcome to week nine of our Summer 2020 Book Club-Style Bible Study--She Loves Truth.

Although the book of Proverbs names multiple individuals as authors of its various sections, King Solomon was uniquely qualified to serve as the principal author for this book of wisdom.

Solomon asked God for wisdom as he reigned over Israel, a request God granted. He identified himself as the source of most of Proverbs. His name appears at the beginning of three distinct sections of the book (chapters 1, 10, and 25) covering almost all of the first twenty-nine chapters.

This summer, we are looking for truth in a 10-week study of the book of Proverbs. Join us each Tuesday morning at 9:00, June 2 - August 4, and let’s seek truth together and record what we find because She Loves Truth!

So far, we've looked at Proverbs 1-3: Trust in the Lord, Proverbs 4-6: Practical Truths For Living, Proverbs 7-9: The Blessings of Wisdom, Proverbs 10-12: Truths to Help You Thrive. Proverbs 13-15: Wisdom and Truth, Proverbs 16-18: Watch this!, Proverbs 19-21: Prudent, Not Quarrelsome, and Proverbs 22-24: Using Our Time Wisely. This week we'll be studying Proverbs 25-27: Are My Words Fitly Spoken.

Are My Words Fitly Spoken?

Proverbs has a lot to say about our words. They can be pleasant, or they can bring us to ruin. Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”

  • Are my words fitly spoken?
  • Are they refreshing to the hearer?
  • Is my message a message of hope?
  • Are my words truthful?
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear. Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the soul of his masters.” (Proverbs 25:11-13)

“With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.” (25:15)

“A man who bears false witness… is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.” (25:18)

“The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks. It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife. Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” (25:23-25)

“For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body. Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart. Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling. A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” (Proverbs 26:20-28)

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2)
So today, let’s ask ourselves, “Are my words fitly spoken?” Let’s ask God to put words in our mouths that are refreshing to the hearer, hope to those who need to hear hope, and truth to those who need to hear the truth, so that our mouth speaks pleasant things and not things that will bring us to ruin.

We so need to carefully weigh our words now--in the online world, in our communities, in our homes.

So true, Barbara—not just our verbal words (which is what I was thinking when I read this passage in Proverbs) but also our written words. Especially our written words! Those are so weighty right now.

They can be and should be:
—> Refreshing to the hearer
—> Hope to those who need to hear hope
—> Truth to those who need to hear the truth

And so many need this kind of verbal and written communication right now!

Are my words fitly spoken? That's most definitely a question I need to be asking myself. Especially with those under my roof, as that can at times be a weakness for me. I get irritated and will at times, allow my emotions get the best of me. Great reminder and time to re-challenge myself in this area!

April, it is so easy to speak unfit words to those we love the most, when it seems like it should be just the opposite. It's for sure a challenge, to all of us!

Such a great question, "Are my words fitly spoken?" May I truly listen to the guidance that God would want to place over my lips and over my heart.

Thank you so much for this small devotion. It really is something to realize how important our words are. I tell my kids and students, your words can speak life or speak death. Be careful what you say.

Angela, it's a reminder I needed this week. Our words matter! They matter a lot! More than we realize. "Your words can speak life or speak death. Be careful what you say." That is great advice!
