So far, we've looked at Proverbs 1-3: Trust in the Lord, Proverbs 4-6: Practical Truths For Living, Proverbs 7-9: The Blessings of Wisdom, Proverbs 10-12: Truths to Help You Thrive. Proverbs 13-15: Wisdom and Truth, and Proverbs 16-18: Watch this! This week we'll be studying Proverbs 19-21: Prudent, Not Quarrelsome.
Prudent, Not Quarrelsome
There are so many life-giving truths found in chapters 19-21. To list them all, we would basically be copying the whole chapter. Today, let’s think about 3 verses that pertain specifically to us as women.
“A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain. House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.” (19:13-14)
Both Proverbs 19:13 and 21:9 speak to the quarrelsome woman, and she doesn’t necessarily have to be a wife. I’ve met plenty of quarrelsome women in the workplace who were single.
Proverbs 19:13 says a quarreling wife is like a continual dripping. Have you ever heard of Chinese water torture? It’s a real thing that has been used since the 15th century, or earlier. This torture is the painful process in which cold water is slowly dripped onto the scalp, forehead, or face for a prolonged period of time allegedly making the restrained victim insane. A quarreling woman is like a continual dripping. Proverbs 21:9 says, "It’s better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife." I want us to think about these two verses today as we go about our day to day activities. Are we quarrelsome? Whether married or single, a quarrelsome nature will not be blessed by God. The other thing I want us to think about today is also found in Proverbs 19 where it talks about prudence: “a prudent wife is from the Lord” (19:13-14). Are we prudent? Webster defines prudent as: "1: the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. 2: sagacity or shrewdness in the management of affairs. 3: skill and good judgment in the use of resources. 4: caution or circumspection as to danger or risk."
Is this who we are as women, wives, and mothers?
These are all excellent questions we should be asking ourselves.
I don’t want to be a quarrelsome woman. I want to be a prudent woman. Let’s pray today that God will help us in our day-to-day life be prudent and not quarrelsome.

Prudent is not a word that we use much these days, but we should. I have to guard against being quarrelsome in spirit, even when I don't say anything out loud.

Yes, Barbara, being quarrelsome on the inside can be just as troublesome as being quarrelsome in an outward way. I need these reminders!

I love being reminded of God's standard of righteousness and of all the divine help that's available to meet that standard.
