She Loves Truth Week Five Proverbs 13-15

Today, we're at the halfway point in our Summer 2020 Book Club-Style Bible Study--She Loves Truth.

Practical wisdom for living is the central theme of the book of Proverbs. In Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10, we are told that the beginning and essence of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

This summer, we are looking for truth in a 10-week study of the book of Proverbs. Join us each Tuesday morning at 9:00, June 2 - August 4, and let’s seek truth together and record what we find because She Loves Truth!

So far, we've looked at Proverbs 1-3: Trust in the Lord, Proverbs 4-6: Practical Truths For Living, Proverbs 7-9: The Blessings of Wisdom, and Proverbs 10-12: Truths to Help You Thrive. This week we'll be studying the Wisdom and Truth of Proverbs 13-15.

Wisdom and Truth

Chapters 13-15 of Proverbs are filled with wisdom and truth.

Let’s look at some of these truths today:

"Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life" (13:3).
"The soul of the diligent is richly supplied" (13:4).
"With those who take advice is wisdom" (13:10).
"Whoever despises the Word brings destruction on himself" (13:13).
"The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life" (13:14).
"Every prudent man acts with knowledge" (13:16).
"Whoever heeds reproof is honored" (13:18).
"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise" (13:20).
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children" (13:22).

Continuing on into chapter 14 we see even more wisdom and truth:

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.” (14:1)

“Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge. The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.” (14:7-8)

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (14:12)

“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless.” (14:15-16)

“Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor….In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” (14:21-23)

“In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.” (14:26-27)

“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him….Wisdom rests in the heart of a man of understanding, but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools.” (14:30-33)

There are also rich truths found in chapter 15. Read chapter 15 and record the truths you find.

I'm always convicted about not tearing down, but building up. It's easy to let wrong little attitudes creep in that contribute to tearing down or looking down on others. And even if I am not actively tearing down, am I actively building up?

Thank you, Tai! These are things I have to constantly remind myself of. I especially cling to “In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life...” (14:26-27)

So much truth here. I am not always keen to take advice, but then I remember that wisdom often comes with advice. Several verses about fearing the Lord. Which reminds me of our sermon which said the only thing we should fear in life is the Lord. The Lord can take care of all the things we fear.

I do too, Maree. And I'm finding that I need these reminders more than every in this crazy summer of 2020 we're living in!!! I need the wisdom to know what to believe and who to listen to and what to trust more than ever these days!

The proverb about a wise woman building up her house has always been a sobering one for me. How often do we foolishly say something that tears down our home?

True, Jerralea! Something we need to take note of for sure! I believe we do want to be wise women, and we want to pass that wisdom on to the next generation—daughters if we have them, maybe even daughters-in-law. It's something we have to be intentional about.
