Proverbs 1-3: Trust in the Lord
The book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, is full of wisdom and truth. The truths written here transcend generations. These truths were just as applicable to Solomon's generation as they are to us today. Over the next several weeks, let’s look at Proverbs and record the truths we find there. Today, we are reading about trusting God as Solomon admonishes us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts.
“My son, do not forget My teaching, but let your heart keep My commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Solomon tells us here how to live long, peaceful lives and that if we want to find favor with God (and men) we should be a faithful, loving friend.
He also reminds us to trust God and not our own thoughts or understanding and to acknowledge Him in every way. That means we go to God first, and not as a last resort, when we need answers to the difficult questions. It also means we give Him the praise and honor He deserves. Want healing and refreshment? Don’t think of yourself as wise Solomon tells us. Also, fear God and turn from evil. We are to give God the first of everything we have—our time, tithes, and offerings. After all, everything we have, ultimately, comes from Him. And remember, when we’ve gone astray when we make wrong choices, He disciplines us just as a father who loves his child. Apparently, that’s going to happen a lot because Solomon tells us not to grow weary of it. This is what our life is going to look like when we trust in the Lord with all our hearts. Proverbs is always a good study, no matter how many times we've gone through it. Though I have known Proverbs 3:5-6 for years, I still need to remind myself not to lean on my own understanding and to trust God's.

Yes, Michele, me too. And I don't even think we could possibly comprehend the extent of His love for us.

I love proverbs. I read it often with the intent of letting that wisdom sink in and resurface at the appointed time. Proverbs 3:5-6 serve as a constant reminder that my understanding is flawed. I have to trust the one who knows it all; past, present and future and cares about the smallest things. This passage is timely in light of our global and national current events. We must learn to stop leaning on our own understanding and give it all to God.
