This Week We're Looking at Manna
I have always been a planner. Among a group of friends, I’m probably the one with the schedule trying to keep everything on track. While planning isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, for me, it stems from the fear of not having enough. If I don’t plan, things might not work out and if they don’t work out, I might miss out on something I need.
Ironically enough, the last few years of my life have not gone according to my plan. When I graduated from college, I wanted a full-time position in New York City. But instead, I struggled to find a job for many months. Eventually, I started freelancing in my field and finally, I landed a full-time position in New York City. However, that ended as quickly as it began due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Yet, I have never lacked anything. I’m sure the Israelites could relate. They were in Egypt for over four hundred years and each day they received their fill of meat and bread. But Egypt was only a part of their journey and God planned to take them to a land flowing with milk and honey. The wilderness between Egypt and Canaan looked nothing like what they were used to. They could no longer predict when their provision of food would arrive. So, naturally, they became distressed and complained to Moses and Aaron. But God provided bread from Heaven to feed them in the wilderness. "When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, 'What is it?' For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, 'It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.'" Ex. 16:15
It was nothing like what they were used to in Egypt but it was still God’s provision.
I’ll be honest, when my world has been shaken up like theirs was, I’ve felt the same way. Still, God has faithfully provided. God often takes us through uncertain seasons like these so that we learn to trust that we are safe and secure in His hands.
It is important to look to God as our source. Whether our life situation is stable or unpredictable, it is God Who ultimately provides for us. Sometimes, in seasons of stability, we trust more in our provision than we trust in the Provider. No matter where we are in life, God wants us to recognize that all good gifts come from Him.
Eventually, Israel entered into the stable land of Canaan: "The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan." Exodus 16:35
But even in Canaan, they needed to remember that God was their provider.
"And He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." Deuteronomy 8:3
Material provision isn’t enough. Those things are important but ultimately, we need the Lord. We need His direction and guidance.
We lack nothing with God. Sure, we’ll walk through shaky, confusing, and uncertain seasons but if He is with us, we have everything we need. "You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst." Nehemiah 9:20
God does not withhold good gifts from us. There were times I had no idea where my next freelance job would come from. But, God always opened a door at the right time. I’ve learned to trust that He knows exactly what He’s doing. Right now, I’m back at a place that feels shaky and confusing. But, I trust that God has a plan.
If you are in a hard season right now, trust that God is with you. If you are in a stable season, remember that all of your provision comes from God and not yourself. Regardless of where we are, may we recognize that He Himself is our daily bread and if we abide in Him, we will lack nothing.
Shanté is passionate about sharing the things God has taught her. She says, "I’m nowhere near perfect and still growing each day."

I can get frustrated and anxious when I don't see the answer or see how things will work out. But I have to remember that God is the One who sees and provides, and I can rest in Him.

Me too, Barbara. And you would think I'd know better. After all, I've seen Him provide in the most miraculous ways over and over and over again! :)

Donna, I do the same. Give my burdens to God and then, sometimes, almost immediately, take them back again. I find it difficult to leave them at the feet of Jesus and let Him work things out. I love how you wrote, "He has a purpose in every hard path." That is so true!

This is an insightful look at manna. While it sometimes doesn't look like I think it will, I have definitely seen God provide in my life. Trusting in Him has brought an immeasurable amount of peace to my life. Thank you Shante, and thank you for hosting Patsy!

I love the word, manna, Marielle. It just screams "provision" and Shanté did an excellent job getting the point across that God is our Provision and He WILL provide. I love where she wrote, “Yet, I have never lacked anything.” :)

I'm glad that God not only gives us what we need, but he gives himself. Who could have imagined that? We are truly blessed with far more than manna.

Give us this day our daily bread. He's been doing it since the great exodus. Manna.

It's just so true that often we look at God's gifts and provision for us and, like Israel, we say, "What is it?"

Every time I read the story of God's provision it is a good reminder to me that He will provide for me too. Lessons in trust.

Manna is for sure a lesson in trust, Lauren! When I look back at all the "Provision" He has been to me, and for me, I should easily trust. I should trust more, without question. But sometimes that isn't the case. These were good reminders today!
