I pray you’ll join us and learn new and exciting things too from His Word.
This Week We're Looking at Light
I have had a fear of the dark for as long as I can remember. I can guarantee it stems from fearing the unknown—fearing what I cannot see. I am still discovering that the best weapon against this fear is prayer. I try to remember to ask God for bravery and peace before my active imagination runs too wild, envisioning what might be lurking in the dark. When I do ask, He faithfully delivers.
Psalm 27:1 says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Because of this verse, I have recently decided to add to my “afraid of-the-dark” prayer, in which I request bravery and peace. My new plan is to also thank the Lord for being my Light. Not for supplying light or emitting light, but for being my Light. Light is just one of the numerous ways in which He reveals His indescribable love.
Of course, the Bible verses that assure us God is the Light of our lives are not exclusively referring to fear of dark places. His light is abundantly available whenever His divine illumination is needed.
He is eager to shine His glory upon all of our circumstances—providing comfort, clarity, and courage. John 1:4 is another beautiful reminder: “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” When we realize we can trust Him to light our way no matter what (or who) we are facing, it elicits an amazing confidence.
While numerous scriptures declare the Lord is Light, some powerful verses proclaim the Bible to be a source of light as well. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s Word enlightens our hearts, teaching us to seek and sense His guidance. Studying His Word is a vital part of pursuing His perfect path. God said there will be trouble in this world—we are fallen people after all. However, He does not leave us stumbling in the dark. He generously offers His love and light to help deal with trials. Psalm 112:4 says, “Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; He is gracious, merciful, and righteous.”
This verse highlights how important it is for us to desire an upright life in which we dive into God’s Word and intentionally follow the road He illuminates for us. In other words, when He sees us reflecting His light, He shines even more light in our lives!
As we steadily strive to live an upright life, Matthew 5:14 comes into the picture: “You are the Light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” When the Lord fills us with His light, it can then radiate from us to give the world a glimpse of Who He is. I don’t interpret that verse as a suggestion. It doesn’t tell us to attempt to be a light. It clearly states that we, as believers, are light in a world that is in desperate need of His glorious brilliance. What a crucial and exciting assignment that is: to receive His light into our lives, and in turn, shine His light for all the world to see.
Being afraid of any kind of darkness can be a fear of the past when we trust the Lord to be our Light.

Interesting that God doesn't tell us to be light but says we are light by virtue of His in us. May we shine brightly for Him!

My fear of the dark started when I was just a little girl. I would get all tucked into bed with the lights out and then with a sudden loud commotion my brother would jump from the closet. It stuck with me.
