I pray you’ll join us and learn new and exciting things too from His Word.
This Week We're Looking at Calling
There is a milestone moment in an infant's life, around 6 -7 months of age, that brings great delight to a new parent. Sometimes it occurs with a casual tilt of their head towards you, in other instances, with a wide toothless grin and a mischievous twinkle in their eye.
It is the moment a child responds with certainty to the calling of their name. As I reflect on this stage of development I am drawn to the parallel between a child’s first recognition of being called by name and our response to the Heavenly Father who calls us—continuously—by name.
And whereas a child grows and matures in the knowledge of who they are, we likewise, as beloved children of God, grow and mature in the depth and breadth of our calling.
It's a process of maturation that occurs overtime but starts with our response to the Father's voice...
Calling us to salvation Before we knew God, He knew us. And while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. And like a child who lacks understanding of the sacrifices made by his parents, our ears are deaf to the calling of God’s grace until our hearts are prepared to receive the gift. "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." Romans 11:29
And oh how wonderful it is when we believe in our hearts by faith, and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord. We receive the gifts of salvation, eternal life, and security in Christ through a calling that will never be revoked.
But there is more, our Father is... Calling us to know who and whose we are
God extends His free grace to all. No one is beyond the sound of His voice. And as a newborn babe is received with open arms into the bosom of his mother, we are received by our Heavenly Father as we are. Perfectly designed by the Master but imperfect in our sin.
"For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth." 1 Corinthians 1:26
But like a child, we come to the Lord by faith—in dependence, trust, and belief. And as we "grow up" in our faith, we gain deeper understanding of who we are and whose we are.
"The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints." Ephesians 1:18
We rejoice in the hope of God's promises, provision, protection, presence, and peace knowing with confidence, the abundant inheritance that is ours today and with Christ forevermore in Heaven.
And when we are filled with this glorious, unchanging truth, we respond to the Father's voice... Calling us to be a reflection of Christ We honour the Giver of the gift of grace with the way we live our lives. The Apostle Paul exhorts... "I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called." Ephesians 4:1
Imagine how this world would be awakened and changed if each believer reflected Jesus Christ in their sphere of influence. If we embodied love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control (Galatians 5:22-23). Gifts of His Holy Spirit at work in us and through us for His glory.
And lastly, our Father is...
Calling us to a unique purpose Now that we are planted in the irrevocable gift of God’s grace, knowing who we are in Christ, and living a spirit-filled life that honours Jesus, we are compelled to participate in His redemptive work in the world. "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14
Our high calling is to know Jesus and to make Him known. To share the Good News of the Gospel message—the power of salvation to those who believe (Romans 1:16b).
And wouldn't you know, our high calling happens in the uniqueness of our purpose. A purpose that is wrapped in the good works prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:10) using the gifts and talents He has given us.
Jesus is calling. Tilt your head toward the sound of His voice and say "speak Lord, I am listening".

What a neat thing to do--to trace the concept of our calling throughout our growth in Him. I don't think I have ever seen that done before. Our appreciation of Him and what He has done for us grows as we know Hm better and walk with Him through life.

"starts with our response to the Father's voice...". . . I remember that first day when I was five - and so many other times along the way as He's called me to awareness, until more and more, I stay close by Him. You mention realizing who we are to Him - really understanding what that meant - soul understanding - that changed my life! Thank you for reminding me of the times He's called to me - and continues! Loved this!

Thank you , Gale, for these straightforward thoughts on calling. We can turn it into a controversial topic or split hairs all day long on who's called to do what, but we're much better served to listen for his voice through His word.
