And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, ‘What are you seeking?’ ‘I am seeking my brothers,’ he said. ‘Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.’ And the man said, ‘They have gone away, for I heard them say, let us go to Dothan.’ So, Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.” Genesis 37:13-17 3 Things to Note
2 Things to Remember
It is abundantly clear throughout Scripture that God expects from His children no less than what was expected of Joseph by Jacob.
Joseph’s immediate response in verse 13 indicates his respect for his father and the fact that he searched for his brothers until he found them demonstrates his complete obedience even though it took extra time and initiative to accomplish the assigned task. It was at an early age that Joseph began to set a pattern of obedience and it was that character trait that set him apart, and God rewarded him abundantly.
How do you instill the character trait of obedience, both quickly and completely, in your children? For more on Joseph, head over to Joyfully Abundant Life's post Did you ever think about the fact that it was God who sent Joseph to Egypt?
Come and Gather: Family Time With God published with permission
Pastor Jeremy Sweatt, Farmington Avenue Baptist Church, West Hartford, Connecticut Come and Gather: Family Time with God
Introducing Come and Gather: Family Time with God, or what we lovingly refer to as Gather.
Gather is a lovely, 35-page, daily devotional centered around families enjoying time together with God and each other. This 27-day devotional is divided into 3 parts:
Part One: Days 1-5, is written specifically with husbands and wives in mind. In this part of Gather, husbands and wives will explore 5 Signs of a Functional Family.
5 Signs of a Functional Family includes:
Part Two: Days 6-20, is written with the whole family in mind. It's A Walk Through God’s Word. From Genesis to Revelation we will discuss subjects like God's mercy and protection, being humble, dealing with difficulties, having a teachable spirit, dependence on God, and much more. Part Three: Days 21-27, is a Men of God Character Study. We'll learn character traits that every Christian should strive to demonstrate in their life straight from characters in God's Word. At the end of Gather, you'll find a place for your family to record specific prayer requests. I love being specific with my prayer request and seeing God answer in specific ways. Recording the answers, as well as the requests, is a great way to help your children see God working in your lives.

I think one way to encourage quick obedience is to enact whatever consequences we use in a timely manner. If children don't obey til the fifth time we tell them, or until we count to five, it's because they know there are no consequences until that point.

You are absolutely right, Barbara. It's a balancing act and we cannot do it well without the wisdom of God. PRAY! And pray often!

You are so right, Boma. Delayed obedience is disobedience, and I like that you say it's trying to appear polite. That's an interesting thought.

Joseph's story is power packed with life lessons. Interestingly, I have never stopped to consider his level of obedience demonstrated as a teenager. WOW! I can see us returning home with an excuse, I couldn't find them Daddy. (insert belly laugh). I expect immediate obedience from my grands and God expects the same from me.

It certainly is, Calvonia! I like your point that you expect immediate obedience and so does God. <— So true!

I remember wanting my children to obey quickly and completely too. It made life so much more pleasant! How much wiser we would be if we all would obey God that way as well (preaching to myself).

Preaching to me too, Lisa! I love the parent child relationship, and our relationship with God becomes so much more meaningful (especially as parents) when we view it that way.
