The psalm is widely attributed to King David. However, some scholars believe it was written by someone else. It is believed by many to have been penned following the Jew's exile in Babylon. The exact date of its composition is unknown.
Overall, Psalm 119 is a celebration of the importance of God's Word in the life of the faithful. It is also a call for us to obey and follow His Word. It's a hymn of praise and is often used in liturgical readings. It has been set to music by many composers. It can also be a prayer. Today, let's look at the last of seven prayers that as believers we should be praying from Psalm 119. 7. “Give me understanding.” "Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments. Those who fear You shall see me and rejoice, because I have hoped in Your Word. I know, O Lord, that Your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me. Let Your steadfast love comfort me according to Your promise to Your servant. Let Your mercy come to me, that I may live; for Your law is my delight. Let the insolent be put to shame, because they have wronged me with falsehood; as for me, I will meditate on Your precepts. Let those who fear You turn to me, that they may know Your testimonies. May my heart be blameless in Your statutes, that I may not be put to shame!" Psalm 119:73-80
Dear God,
I come before You today with a humble heart, asking for Your guidance and understanding. You have created me with Your own hands, and I trust that You know me better than I know myself. I ask that You grant me understanding so that I may learn and follow Your commandments.
