The psalm is widely attributed to King David. However, some scholars believe it was written by someone else. It is believed by many to have been penned following the Jew's exile in Babylon. The exact date of its composition is unknown.
Overall, Psalm 119 is a celebration of the importance of God's Word in the life of the faithful. It is also a call for us to obey and follow His Word. It's a hymn of praise and is often used in liturgical readings. It has been set to music by many composers. It can also be a prayer. Today, let's look at the first of seven prayers that as believers we should be praying from Psalm 119. 1. "Teach me Your statutes.”"Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of Your mouth. In the way of Your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches." Psalm 119:12-14
Dear God,
I come before You today with a humble heart, seeking Your guidance and wisdom. I ask that You would teach me Your statutes, and help me to understand and follow them more closely. Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Help me to walk in Your ways and to keep Your commandments. Help me to meditate on Your Word day and night, that I may know Your will and follow it with all my heart.

You post made me think about how hard it is for me to find pleasure in rules - yet it made me want to learn how to find pleasure in His law instead of it feeling like a I'm about to get into trouble. I remember reading in The Way of a Pilgrim to pray the Jesus Prayer, even though you might not see the power of it - to just keep praying and enlightenment will happen. I think maybe that's what I need to do with Psalm 119 - and God will grow within me pleasure in His law.

It's great, Maryleigh, to hear this post has encouraged you to explore finding pleasure in God's law. It can be challenging to change our mindset to find joy in rules, but with perseverance and faith, it is possible. Rules are like fences. They're not meant to hem us in but for our protection. Keep seeking God and trusting Him. I encourage you to keep reading and meditating on Psalm 119 and ask God to help you find pleasure in His law.

I attended a graduation ceremony in which the teens had been memorizing Psalm 119:1-16, and I will never forget the impact of hearing those young voices declaring, “I will not forget your Word…”

Michele, isn't it wonderful to witness young people engaging with and cherishing meaningful Scripture!? Hearing their voices declare their commitment to remembering the Word can be a powerful and inspiring experience. I can't believe it's graduation time already! Where has the first part of the year gone!?

Psalm 119 has verses that have encouraged me many times, especially when dealing with those in authority who don't have wisdom. :-)
