Where to Look When You Need Wisdom

This past April, while reading through God's Word with the Sweeter Than Honey Bible reading plan, on April 21, I came across Proverbs 7-9. Proverbs is a book known for its Wisdom.

“The Lord possessed me [wisdom] at the beginning of His work, the first of His acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before He had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When He established the heavens, I was there; when He drew a circle on the face of the deep, when He made firm the skies above...

when He established the fountains of the deep, when He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him, like a master workman, and I was daily His delight, rejoicing before Him always, rejoicing in His inhabited world and delighting in the children of man." Proverbs 8:22-31

Wisdom was there when God:

• established the heavens (Genesis 1:1).
• drew a circle on the face of the deep (Genesis 1:2).
• made firm the skies above (Genesis 1:5).
• established the fountains of the deep (Genesis 1:7).
• assigned to the sea its limit (Genesis 1:9).
• marked out the foundations of the earth (Genesis 1:10).

Wisdom was there before “…the first of the dust of the world” (8:26b) and wisdom “delighting in the children of man” (8:31). That’s us!! ​

This same wisdom, that God used at creation, calls us today:

“Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: ‘To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man.’” Prov. 8:1-4

And she says, “For wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her” (8:11) and “…whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord” (8:35).​

Where do we find this kind of wisdom?

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.” Proverbs 9:10-11
