Who God Says He Is

The Gospel of John is a powerful book. Many times, those who are searching out Christianity, or are new followers of Jesus Christ, are encouraged to read this book of the Bible first.

Probably, the most popular verse in the Scriptures is found in the book of John.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

We see this verse displayed on billboards, written on poster board and held up at sporting events, even on bumper stickers. Christians and non-Christians alike are familiar with it.

The book of John holds a treasure trove of God's love for us. The greatest display of His love for us happened at the cross, but we also find a great display of His love for us in these 7 I AM statements found in the book. Let's look at those today.

1. I AM the Bread of Life

"Jesus said to them, 'I AM the Bread of Life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.'" John 6:35

2. I AM the Light of the World

"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I AM the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life.'” John 8:12

3. I AM the Door

"I AM the Door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture." John 10:9

4. I AM the Good Shepherd

"I AM the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.... I AM the Good Shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me." John 10:11, 14

5. I AM the Resurrection and the Life

"Jesus said to her, 'I AM the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.'" John 11:25

6. I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life

"Jesus said to him, 'I AM the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" John 14:6

7. I AM the Vine

"I AM the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.... I AM the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." John 15:1, 5

Jesus tells us here in the book of John that He is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Door, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection, the Way, the Truth, the Life, and the Vine.

He also tells us that:

Whoever comes to Me shall not hunger (John 6:35).
Whoever believes in Me shall never thirst (John 6:35).
Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness (John 8:12).
Whoever follows Me... will have the Light of life (John 8:12).
If anyone enters by Me he will be saved (John 10:9).
If anyone enters by Me he... will go in and out and find pasture (John 10:9).
[Jesus] lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11).
I know My own and My own know Me (John 10:14).
Whoever believes in Me though he die yet shall he live (John 11:25).
No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).
My Father is the Vinedresser (John 15:1).
You are the branches (John 15:5).
Whoever abides in Me bears much fruit (John 15:5).
Apart from Me you can do nothing (John 15:5).

These are all important reminders for us today.

We don't want to hunger or thirst, unless it's a hunger and a thirst for God. We don't want to walk in darkness. We want to walk in the Light of life!

Our soul longs for salvation and for good pasture.

Jesus gave His life for us—His sheep, and He knows us! If we are His, we know Him too. If we believe in Him, we have eternal life, and no one comes to the Father except through Jesus.

His Father is the Vinedresser, He is the Vine, and we are the branches. To bear fruit we must abide in the Vine, and apart from It, we can do nothing!

I love these gentle reminders of Who God says He is.
