Proverbs 1-3: Trust in the Lord
The book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, is full of wisdom and truth. The truths written here transcend generations. These truths were just as applicable to Solomon’s generation as they are to us today. Over the next several days, let’s look at Proverbs and record the truths we find there. Today, we are reading about trusting God as Solomon admonishes us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts.
“My son, do not forget My teaching, but let your heart keep My commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Solomon tells us here how to live long, peaceful lives and that if we want to find favor with God (and men) we should be a faithful, loving friend. He also reminds us to trust God and not our own thoughts or understanding and to acknowledge Him in every way. That means we go to God first, and not as a last resort, when we need answers to the difficult questions. It also means we give Him the praise and honor He deserves. Want healing and refreshment? Don’t think of yourself as wise Solomon tells us. Also, fear God and turn from evil. We are to give God the first of everything we have—our time, tithes, and offerings. After all, everything we have, ultimately, comes from Him, right?
And remember, when we’ve gone astray, when we make wrong choices, He disciplines us just as a father who loves and disciplines his child. Apparently, that’s going to happen a lot because Solomon tells us not to grow weary of it. This is a roadmap of what our life is going to look like when we trust in the Lord with all our hearts.
How have you needed to trust God and lean on His understanding and not your own recently?
About Sweeter Than Honey
When I read God’s Word each morning, I find inspiration and insight that keeps my day on track. Join me on this journey. Let’s settle in with His Word—it’s His Love Letter to us. Did you know that? Let’s read it like a love letter, expecting to glean something for our walk with Him every day. Let’s look for peace in the chaos and strength for our weaknesses. Even on our busiest days we can carve out a few minutes to refocus on the important—the eternal. Can’t we? We may have to get up a little earlier, when the house is still and quiet, or stay up a few minutes after the others are all tucked in for the night, but we can do this! I know we can.
Let's be intentional about focusing on God’s Word and the truths found there. Let's let it inspire us to live out our faith each day in a way that causes those we come in contact with to want what we have found. God sees you. He knows you by name, He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He cares about every detail of your daily existence. He wrote you a Love Letter. Let’s dive in!
Hey Mama! PRAY: Praying Proverbs Over Your Child
As Christian parents, it is our responsibility to teach our children to be more like Christ, and we need help with this daunting task. We need a resource for character building!
There are a lot of books written on child-rearing, but let me introduce you to the best child-rearing book ever written—the book of Proverbs. It’s God’s textbook for the task of raising little Christians that become adults who strive in every way to be more like Him.

Me too, Susan! I feel as if I've needed to trust Him and lean on His understanding more in the last few years than at any other time in my life. :) So, so, so, so thankful for His continued care and guidance!

This book is so very practical, Barbara, to our everyday lives—just as practical for us today as it was for the people of Solomon's day! AMAZING! The Bible is ALIVE. His Word is TRUE. Proverbs is our roadmap for life.

Yes, Lesley! I am reminded about the illustration of a mother weaving a beautiful tapestry and her young son sitting on the floor beneath it. The mother, sees the beauty of what it will become. The son, only sees a matted mess of tangled threads. God sees the beauty of what we can become, even when we only see the mess. He sees things as they truly are, and can be. Seek His perspective! Trust Him! Acknowledge Him!

Trust in the Lord was my theme for myself for last year and rest in the Lord (sort of a continuation) is this year. Thank you for adding to my learning and meditation on it.

I love both of those life-themes, Lauren!! The first, trust in the Lord, is a stepping stone to the second, rest in the Lord. When we trust in Him, then we are more easily able to securely rest in Him. :) Beautiful!

Great article. He is trustworthy because he has proven time and time again that He can be trusted.

So true, Linda! And you could even flip that around to say He can be trusted because He has proven time and time again that He is trustworthy. It's such a blessing to be able to look back over my life and see the many times when my faith was small, but He remained faithful—my trust was shaky, but He has always, ALWAYS been trustworthy! PRAISE THE LORD!!
