Nehemiah 6-9: Treasure the Treasure of God's Word
Nehemiah and the remnant who returned to Jerusalem from the Great Exile in Babylon rebuilt and fortified the walls of Jerusalem against much opposition and in record time. “And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God” (Nehemiah 6:16). A role of genealogy is recorded of the people, and then we find Ezra, in the town square of Jerusalem, reading the Law of God.
And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.’ For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, ‘Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’ So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, ‘Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.’ And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.” (Nehemiah 8:1-12)
Do you realize how special it was for these people to hear the Book of the Law read to them, and for the Levites to come alongside the common people and teach them and help them to understand it? All these people gathered together as one people, and they told Ezra to bring the Book of the Law. This wasn’t a book that every home had access to like we do the Bible today. Sometimes, I wonder if we don’t take for granted our access to God’s Word and forget that it hasn’t always been this way. Even in modern history, not everyone in the world has access to His Word. Today, let’s treasure the treasure of God’s Word!
How are you treasuring the treasure of God’s Word today?

God's Word brings sorrow at first when we realize we're in the wrong. But oh, the joy when we realize God's grace and forgiveness.
