Sweeter Than Honey: That Heavenly Reward

What if we spent a few quiet moments with God each morning? What if we were intentional about making time for it? What if we committed to doing that all year long and by the year’s end we found that we had read the entire Bible!?

How many times, on January 1, have you committed to reading the Bible from cover to cover in a year? I have made that commitment too many times to count, and I have failed too many times to admit.

​A few years ago though, I used a one-year, chronological order of book authorship, Bible Reading Itinerary.

Did you know that Genesis was not the first book of the Bible written? While plans like this vary somewhat, because it is simply impossible to put an exact date on some books of the Bible, the plan I used begins with the book of Job.

​Revelation 11-13: That Heavenly Reward

The Seventh Seal will be accompanied by seven trumpets. We read of John’s vision of the seventh trumpet here in chapter 11. Before that though, John writes of two witnesses. At the end of that account, we see people giving glory to God in Heaven. But in these End Times, what did it take before unrighteous people would give glory to God? It took the death and resurrection of these two witnesses, plus a great earthquake before these people were terrified and finally “gave glory to the God of Heaven” (11:13).

"And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of Heaven.

The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in Heaven, saying, ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.’ And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, ‘We give thanks to You, Lord God Almighty, Who is and Who was, for You have taken Your great power and begun to reign. The nations raged, but Your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding Your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear Your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.’

Then God's Temple in Heaven was opened, and the ark of His covenant was seen within His Temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail." (Revelation 11:13-19)

I don’t know about you, friend, but I want to be in that group of servants and saints that gets rewarded! I’m sure you do as well. How do we get there? The passage tells us—“those who fear Your name” (11:18).

Those who fear the name of the Lord will receive a reward in Heaven this passage tells us. The Apostle John goes on to write that “both small and great” (11:18) will receive a reward for fearing the name of the Lord. That’s what I love about God’s playing field, there is no hierarchy! There’s no system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority. God looks at all of us as equals in His kingdom. 

He’s not interested in whether or not I am a servant or master, bond or free, Jew or Gentile. The color of my skin doesn’t matter to God, neither does the amount of money in my bank account. We are all on the same, level playing field in His eyes.

God’s only requirement for that Heavenly reward is that we fear Him. This isn’t fear like I fear heights or fear running into a bear on a hike through the mountains. This is a reverent fear that says, “I will love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, and strength" as Deuteronomy 6:4 states.

Let’s read it like a Love Letter, expecting to glean something for our walk with Him every day. Let’s look for peace in the chaos and strength for our weaknesses. Even on our busiest days we can carve out a few minutes to refocus on the important. Can’t we? We may have to get up a little earlier, when the house is still and quiet, or stay up a few minutes after the others are tucked in for the night, but we can do this! I know we can!

Let's be intentional about focusing on God’s Word and the truths found there. Let's let it inspire us to live out our faith each day in a way that causes those we come in contact with to want what we have found. God sees you. He knows you by name, He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He cares about every detail of your daily existence. He wrote you a Love Letter. Let’s dive in! ​
