Ezekiel 10-12: I am the Lord“…I will judge you at the border of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. For you have not walked in My statutes, nor obeyed My rules, but have acted according to the rules of the nations that are around you.” (Ezekiel 11:11-12)
Twice in chapter 11, we read the “I am the Lord” statement. The statement is closely related to His judgment and the fact that through His judgment, “you shall know that I am the Lord” (11:11). Israel and Judah had forgotten that. Sometimes, we forget that. Israel and Judah forgot Who God is and trusted in the ways of the nations that surrounded them. They no longer walked in God’s statutes or obeyed His rules, but “acted according to the rules of the nations that are around“ (11:12) them.
Even through judgment, God still has a plan to bring His people back to Himself. “Therefore say, ’Thus says the Lord God: Though I removed them far off among the nations, and though I scattered them among the countries, yet I have been a sanctuary to them for a while in the countries where they have gone.’ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.’ And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My rules and obey them. And they shall be My people, and I will be their God.” (Ezekiel 11:16-20)
God removed Israel and Judah from Jerusalem and scattered them far off among other nations and countries, “I have been a sanctuary to them for a while in the countries where they have gone” (11:16). But even in punishment and judgment, God is still there with His people. Isn’t that comforting to know? “And they shall be My people, and I will be their God” (11:20).
The last “I am the Lord” statement in this passage is found in chapter 12 verse 25. “For I am the Lord; I will speak the Word that I will speak, and it will be performed….” Nothing has changed about that statement. It still remains true. He is the Lord, He speaks what He speaks, and it will perform His will.
These are the truths we have to cling to when all the world around us seems to be falling apart: 1. He is the Lord forever. 2. He speaks what He speaks. 3. He will always perform His will.
How are you clinging to these three truths today--He is the Lord forever, He speaks what He speaks, He will always perform His will?
About Sweeter Than Honey
When I read God’s Word each morning, I find inspiration and insight that keeps my day on track. Join me on this journey. Let’s settle in with His Word—it’s His Love Letter to us. Did you know that? Let’s read it like a love letter, expecting to glean something for our walk with Him every day. Let’s look for peace in the chaos and strength for our weaknesses. Even on our busiest days we can carve out a few minutes to refocus on the important—the eternal. Can’t we? We may have to get up a little earlier, when the house is still and quiet, or stay up a few minutes after the others are all tucked in for the night, but we can do this! I know we can.
Let's be intentional about focusing on God’s Word and the truths found there. Let's let it inspire us to live out our faith each day in a way that causes those we come in contact with to want what we have found. God sees you. He knows you by name, He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He cares about every detail of your daily existence. He wrote you a Love Letter. Let’s dive in!

I'm grateful that the Lord is always the Lord! And also that God's will for us is always good. I draw such comfort in that.

“Jesus Christ [and His Word] is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). It is so comforting, Joanne!

Scripture portrays God's sovereignty AND his good intentions toward us--even when we don't understand!

And I love that, Michele! I love that even when I cannot see Him working, I can know that He is. And when He says “I am the Lord” in Ezekiel 11:11, 12; 12:25, nothing has changed about those statements. The God of Scripture in Ezekiel’s day—that sovereign, just, jealous-for-us God still remains the same and just as true for us today. His good intentions toward us remain the same as well.

Yes, Debbie, merciful indeed!! When I read those 3 “I am the Lord” statements—Ezekiel 11:11, 12; 12:25, I just marvel at the fact that He wants us to know Him, intimately. That's what this whole Love Letter He's given us—the Bible—is all about. To Know Him. To Make Him Known.
