Sweeter Than Honey: God's Everlasting Love

What if we spent a few quiet moments with God each morning? What if we were intentional about making time for it? What if we committed to doing that all year long and by the year’s end we found that we had read the entire Bible!?

How many times, on January 1, have you committed to reading the Bible from cover to cover in a year? I have made that commitment too many times to count, and I have failed too many times to admit.

​A few years ago though, I used a one-year, chronological order of book authorship, Bible Reading Itinerary.

Did you know that Genesis was not the first book of the Bible written? While plans like this vary somewhat, because it is simply impossible to put an exact date on some books of the Bible, the plan I used begins with the book of Job.

Romans 7-9: God's Everlasting Love

In this passage, Paul writes of being released from the law, the law and sin, the life we have in the Spirit, that we are heirs with Christ Jesus, and the eternal glory we will share with Him. He also writes of God's sovereign choice and Israel's unbelief. Tucked in there he gives us this gem about God's everlasting love. ​

"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He Who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God Who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the One Who died—more than that, Who was raised—Who is at the right hand of God, Who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:31-39)

“These things” (8:31) that Paul begins the above passage with refer back to his comparison of “the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (8:18). He reminds us, and the church in Rome to whom he is writing, that God is for us and that He gave His own Son to be the payment for our sin.

Paul goes on to remind us that Christ Jesus not only died for our sin, but He was also raised from the dead, and now He sits at the right hand of God interceding for us. Then, Paul asks the question, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword” (8:35)? ​

No, none of these things will separate us from God’s love. His love for us is everlasting and, as the Psalmist wrote, long-suffering. 

​Then, Paul, as he so often does, quotes from the Old Testament. He quotes from Psalm 44:22, a psalm of King David where David cries out to God for help. Paul too has spent much of his Christian life crying out to God for help. “We are more than conquerors” (8:37) Paul reminds us. Not just conquerors, more than conquerors! 

We are more than conquerors and nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (8:39). I’m so thankful today for God’s everlasting, long-suffering love!​

We may have to get up a little earlier, when the house is still and quiet, or stay up a few minutes after the others are tucked in for the night, but we can do this! I know we can!

Let's be intentional about focusing on God’s Word and the truths found there. Let's let it inspire us to live out our faith each day in a way that causes those we come in contact with to want what we have found. God sees you. He knows you by name, He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He cares about every detail of your daily existence. He wrote you a Love Letter. Let’s dive in! ​
