2 Thessalonians 1-3: Do Not Grow Weary of Doing Good
Yesterday, we read the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the church at Thessalonica. He encouraged them to keep on keeping on and listed 15 things they should keep doing in his powerful benediction. Today, we are looking at his second, and final, letter to the Thessalonians which scholars feel was written not too long after the first. In his second letter, Paul writes much about the Second Coming as if maybe there was some confusion, misunderstanding, or false teaching among the church about the event. Then, in chapter 3, Paul encourages them not to be idle.
“Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the Word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
“Do not grow weary of doing good” (3:13), Paul writes. He also writes this same reminder in Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” It’s so easy for us to grow weary, isn’t it?! Let’s pray and ask God to give us strength, “the Lord is faithful” (3:3).
What are you weary of today, friend? This world makes me weary, but this world is not my home! Let's just remember, "for in due season we will reap." AMEN!
About Sweeter Than Honey
When I read God’s Word each morning, I find inspiration and insight that keeps my day on track. Join me on this journey. Let’s settle in with His Word—it’s His Love Letter to us. Did you know that? Let’s read it like a love letter, expecting to glean something for our walk with Him every day. Let’s look for peace in the chaos and strength for our weaknesses. Even on our busiest days we can carve out a few minutes to refocus on the important—the eternal. Can’t we? We may have to get up a little earlier, when the house is still and quiet, or stay up a few minutes after the others are all tucked in for the night, but we can do this! I know we can.
Let's be intentional about focusing on God’s Word and the truths found there. Let's let it inspire us to live out our faith each day in a way that causes those we come in contact with to want what we have found. God sees you. He knows you by name, He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He cares about every detail of your daily existence. He wrote you a Love Letter. Let’s dive in!

It is easy to get weary when we don't see situations changing. I have had to remind myself more than a few times lately that my responsibility is to just be faithful with my responsibilities, mostly to pray. Thanks for this beautiful reminder!

I totally agree, Donna! Unfortunately, I often grow weary of praying when I don't see God working. But I KNOW He's working! I love that quote —> "...my responsibility is to just be faithful with my responsibilities, mostly to pray." SO TRUE!!

Me too, Maryleigh! "...in the upheaval of a schedule" gets me every time! But I have to remember that God is in these upheavals! It's His perfect plan in His perfect time. I just need to turn my eyes to God—my Anchor!

It gets wearying, sometimes, to keep on fighting against the tendencies of our flesh or serving when we don't see results. But when we get to eternity, our time here will seem so short. And anything done for Jesus will be so worth it.

Funny how we are so "results" driven, isn't it!? But I want to be FAITH DRIVEN!! Faith driven all the way to eternity! :)

I love reading Paul's letters, Amy. He is so straightforward and practical. Many of the same things the church of his day needed to hear the church of our day needs to hear as well.
