Seeking Him Week Ten—Sexual Purity: The Joy of Moral Freedom

Welcome to our Summer 2021 Book Club-Style Bible Study! We are using the book Seeking Him by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and Tim Grissom.

Sexual Purity: The Joy of Moral Freedom

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3

We have come to understand the importance of walking in submission and obedience to the revealed will of God in order to live a life that is in a state of constant revival. In many cases His Word leaves us with no doubt as to what His will is.

Sexual purity is the will of God for every child of God.

“…The hour has come for you to wake from sleep [To be revived!]. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.” Romans 13:11-13

​The Creator God made us as sexual beings with sexual desires. This has been His will from the beginning—not only to populate the earth, but for us to experience joy and freedom within the bounds of marriage as we give ourselves fully. It is a picture of Christ and His bride. He intended this beautiful gift to teach us the depths of His love for His people.

As beautiful as sexual freedom and enjoyment are within marriage, there is a flip side. Sexual immorality is ugly. It will lead us into bondage. Sexual immorality separates us from a Holy God. We cannot continue on the path of Seeking Him unless we stay sexually pure.

Even our thoughts must be pure.

“…everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:28

This is not easy in a world that is saturated with sexual images and promotes sexual freedom.

How can you stay pure in the midst of a sexually driven culture?

1. You must know God’s Word and commit to obey it.
   ​“…God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Hebrews 13:4 "Those who practice such things will not be part of Christ’s kingdom." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Revelation 21:8
   
   “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.” Ephesians 5:3 It must not be tolerated even one time.
   
   
2. You must recognize when you are not sexually pure. If you are entertaining any sexual desire outside of marriage, in thought or deed, you are practicing immorality.
   
   Come to Christ and confess this sin. He forgives sexual sins (Psalm 51).
   
   Come into the light. Find a trustworthy friend to pray for you and with you and to keep you accountable (James 5:16).
   
   Make a covenant with your eyes. “I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?” Job 31:1 Watch what you watch.
   
   “Flee from sexual immorality.” 1 Corinthians 6:18
   
   "So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart." 2 Timothy 2:22 Just as Joseph fled from Pharaoh’s wife, you must flee! Know what your weak spots are—what are the things that lead you into temptation—and avoid them.
   
   Rehearse the consequences. “If we would rehearse in advance the devastating consequences of immorality, we would be far less prone to commit it.” —Randy Alcorn
   
   Come boldly to His throne of grace to find help. He will show you a way to escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13) God is faithful to help you in your time of temptation.
   
   ​Rely on the Holy Spirit. ​“Walk in the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

“Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Rom. 13:14

“So that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:27
