"Lord Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts, The Lord Almighty) is often glossed over when I find it in the Bible. Somehow I fail to admire or wonder at this particular name of God as easily as I do others. While its English translation may not seem as impressive, a quick study of the name reveals that it is one I ought to revere and cherish.
It is first found in 1 Samuel 1 in the story of Hannah and the birth of Samuel. Having struggled with infertility, I feel a kinship with Hannah. We both understand the longing to be a mother and the heartache of waiting for God’s provision. Hannah’s pain was acute since her lack of children was what she had become known for. It is the description used to identify in Scripture. But in her grief, she humbly entreats God for that which she desperately desires. What name does she appeal to? Lord Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts. “And she vowed a vow and said, ‘O Lord of Hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your servant and remember me and not forget Your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life.’” 1 Samuel 1:11 While it may seem surprising that she uses this name, if we understand its meaning and significance, Hannah’s choice makes perfect sense.
Sabaoth is The Lord of Hosts Who commands armies and angels. These hosts eagerly do His bidding and are also ministers of His grace to His children. Sabaoth is the Lord Almighty, all-powerful. His power is such that He spoke the world into existence (Genesis 1-2), parted the Red Sea and destroyed the armies of Pharaoh (Exodus 15:1-21), never tires or has need of rest (Isaiah 40:28), cast out demons with a mere finger (Luke 11:20), raised Christ from the dead and promises to do the same for all who place their trust in Him (1 Corinthians 6:14).
Hannah knew God. She knew and understood that His power cannot be matched or His purposes thwarted. His power was her only hope. It was He Who had closed her womb, and only He could open it. She pours out her heart, humbly entreating Him to give her a son. In His kindness and with power that only He wields, God grants her request and allows her to conceive. He places life inside her, causes it to grow, and her son Samuel is born. That is power. That is the Lord of Hosts. Like Hannah, we have only one hope. And thankfully, we serve the same God. Whatever pains, heartaches, or difficulties we face, we too have access to LORD SABAOTH. The One Who commands armies of angels, Who places life in the womb, Who raises dead men to life. He was faithful to Hannah, and He remains so for us today." —Elisabeth
