I hope you'll join us for "Our Words Matter" because they do! Have you ever paused to consider how absolutely amazing it is that God simply spoke creation into existence? From the tallest tree to the tiniest blade of grass, every breeze that blows, every mountain and valley, every organism down to the most minuscule cell exists because God spoke.

When God created man, He made us image bearers, which means that we were designed to mirror His nature and character. While it is true that we are a dim and imperfect reflection of our Creator, God has shared certain qualities about Himself with us.

God has given us the responsibilities of dominion and stewardship. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, He grants us the ability to display some of His attributes such as love, mercy, goodness, kindness, and justice. And just like our Father, we have the ability to create.

Do you realize that just like God, you and I can create through speaking? We certainly cannot speak worlds into being as our Lord did, but the Bible is clear that our words hold the power of life and death. By our speech, we can create joy or heartache for those that hear us.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Prov. 18:21

“If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.” James 3:3-5

Our words have great power. As those made in God’s image, our words ought to reflect His kindness, holiness, love, and glory. But all too often our words are used not only to dishonor God but also to injure His creation—our fellow image-bearers.

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.

It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it, we bless our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers these things ought not to be so.” James 3:6-10

Our words matter. What we say and how we say it can make a deep and lasting impact on the lives of those around us. The obvious ways we sin in this way against God and others are through angry or quarrelsome words, gossip, blasphemy, slander, deceit, and coarse language. But there is another less conspicuous way we sin with our words. It is so subtle that we often are unaware of its daily presence in our lives. I am speaking of the sin of careless words.
