Names of God Resources

"From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised!" (Ps. 113:3) 

This biblical wisdom from the book of Psalms calls us to sing praises to the name of the Lord, to dive deeper into our understanding of God's many names, and to appreciate the significance of His name in our lives.

• Genesis 4:26 states people began to call upon the name of the Lord in the time of Seth's birth.
• Deuteronomy 32:3 emphasizes the greatness of God's name.
• 1 Chronicles 16:29 urges us to worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.
• Isaiah 50:10 encourages us to trust in the name of the Lord even in darkness.
• Joel 2:32 promises salvation to all who call upon the name of the Lord.

• Micah 5:4-5 foretells the greatness of the Lord's name and His role as a source of peace.

A House for the Name of the Lord:

In 2 Chronicles 2, we discover that Solomon built the Temple "for the name of the Lord." This concept invites us to consider what it means to build a place of worship for God's name. Solomon's Temple was not meant to confine or contain God but to serve as an act of praise, a space where hearts could be moved by God, and where His name could be honored and thanked. It was a symbol of God's covenant and presence among His people. Though Solomon's Temple no longer stands, its purpose endures. The name of the Lord continues to echo throughout the earth in various forms, including works, words, and communities that honor and glorify His name.

For His/My/Your Name's Sake:

The Bible mentions "for His name's sake" multiple times, emphasizing the significance of God's name in various contexts:

• 1 John 2:12 reminds us that our sins are forgiven "for His name's sake."
• Psalm 23:3 speaks of God leading us in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
• Psalm 106:8 tells us that God saved us for His name's sake to reveal His mighty power.
• 1 Samuel 12:22 assures us that the Lord will not forsake His people for His great name's sake.
• Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Revelation tell us we may face trials "for [Jesus'] name's sake."
• Revelation 2:3 commends the church in Ephesus for enduring patiently  "for My name's sake."
• Isaiah 48:9 and Ezekiel 20:44 stress God's mercy and patience "for My name's sake."

These verses illustrate how God's name is intertwined with forgiveness, guidance, salvation, endurance, and mercy.

Just as the Bible tells us in Proverbs, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe" Proverbs 18:10), His name is a source of endless wonder and power. It inspires worship, guides our lives, and offers forgiveness and salvation. Just as Solomon built the Temple "for the name of the Lord," our lives can be a living monument to God's name.

​May we continually sing praises to His name, seek refuge in His presence, and live our lives for His name's sake, recognizing that His name endures forever and ever. "Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore!" (Psalm 113:2)
