To grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Another purpose of discipleship is to grow to know God our Savior. In His three-year ministry on earth, Jesus often stated that His goal was to teach His disciples about His Father.
I Peter 2:21 says,
"For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in His steps."
Jesus wanted us to know that God is alive, real, sovereign, loving, and is preparing a place for His believers in heaven. So another purpose of discipleship is to grow in our knowledge of the Savior. In Philippians 1:9, Paul said,
"it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and discernment."
As we grow to know God our Savior, we yearn to know His power and to experience it at work in our lives. We long to feel His presence more closely and fully than we have experienced previously. We yearn to understand and grow in His grace.
To become fruit bearers for the Kingdom of God. Another purpose of discipleship is to bear fruit for the kingdom of God. It says in John 15:8,
"By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples."
It is essential that we prove our faith by being fruitful Christians.
Discipleship develops in us the character and virtues we need to be productive Christians in order to carry out the responsibilities given to us as believers such as serving others and spreading the gospel.
"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'" (John 8:12)
Then in Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says,
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven."
We are commanded to take the light we are given and spread it around the world to others so that they may see Christ and receive Him for themselves.
