The following is taken from Sweeter Than Honey: A 365-Day Devotional Journey and Bible reding itinerary—May 5.
"WOW!! Do you see the crucifixion foretold in Psalm 22!? David penned it hundreds of years before crucifixion was even used as a form of punishment. It was written hundreds of years before our Savior shed His blood on the cross of Calvary to pay the price of our sins! This is prophecy! "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me [Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34]? ...But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people ["despised and rejected by men," Isaiah 53:3]. All who see Me mock Me; they make mouths at Me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in the Lord; let Him deliver Him; let Him rescue Him, for He delights in Him! ["He trusts in God; let God deliver Him" Matthew 27:43]” ...I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; it is melted within My breast; My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue sticks to My jaws [“I thirst.” John 19:28]; You lay Me in the dust of death. ...a company of evildoers encircles Me; they have pierced My hands and feet ["But He was pierced for our transgressions" Isaiah 53:5]—I can count all My bones—they stare and gloat over Me; they divide My garments among them ["divided his garments" Matthew 27:35, Mark 15:24, Luke 23:34, John 19:23-24], and for My clothing they cast lots [“Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” John 19:24]. But You, O Lord, do not be far off! O You My help, come quickly to my aid! Deliver My soul from the sword... All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and He rules over the nations. ["Every knee shall bow" Isaiah 45:23, Romans 14:11] All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before Him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the One who could not keep Himself alive. Posterity shall serve Him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn, that He has done it ["it is finished" John 19:30]." Psalm 22:1-31"
In the haunting echoes of Psalm 22, we find more than mere poetry; we discover the symphony of divine redemption resounding through the corridors of time. Through the lens of prophecy, David's words transcend their earthly origin to reveal the grandeur of God's redemptive plan. As we contemplate the striking parallels between Psalm 22 and the crucifixion narrative, let us not only marvel at the depth of God's wisdom but also embrace the profound truth that He has indeed done it—all for the salvation of mankind. As we approach the Easter season, may the words of Psalm 22 stir within us a renewed sense of awe and gratitude for the sacrificial love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
