Understanding Romans 8:28-29

I recently heard someone say that comfort is the god of our generation, and it struck a chord with me. Maybe that’s why verses like Romans 8:28 are so frustrating to so many:

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Some translations say it like this: “God works all things together for good” or “God works in all things for the good.”

If you weren’t already frustrated, you might be now—because that verse says in all things.

Faith and Hope create a powerful partnership! #Faith trusts in who #God is. #Hope confidently expects Him to fulfill His #promises. Together, they anchor our souls and sustain us through every #trial. Faith is the foundation of hope (Heb 11:1). Hope fuels perseverance in faith (Rom 8:24-25). Faith anchors hope in #Christ (Col 1:27). Hope strengthens faith during doubt (Ps 42:11). Both are rooted in God’s Word (Rom 15:4). Let’s explore how these two work together to shape our walk with Christ.

“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Romans 8:24-25

Hope and faith are deeply intertwined in the life of a Christian, working together to sustain and guide believers in their walk with God.

I like how Hebrews 11:1 is translated in the NIV, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

While faith and hope are distinct, they are also inseparable aspects of a vibrant spiritual life.

I’ve made that commitment more times than I can count, and I’ve failed more times than I’d like to admit. Did you know that Genesis wasn’t the first book of the Bible written? While these plans can vary, since it's impossible to pinpoint exact dates for some books, the plan I used began with the book of Job. Let me introduce you to Sweeter Than Honey, a book patterned after that Bible Reading Itinerary.

My Weakness His Strength

Weakness is something that no one likes to claim. I don’t find it easy to admit when I am weak in any way. I remember when I first made my big international move to start my journey as a missionary in England. There were so many areas of my life that were the epitome of weakness!

I all but cried in the grocery store when I couldn’t find the things that I was searching for. Everything looked so foreign, literally! And it wasn’t even in a different language. (Although I do contend that there are two very different languages called English!) I had to learn to drive on the other side of the road and the other side of the car. And the signs were all different! I felt like at every turn or even every moment I was just so very weak. Thankfully with the help of good friends and time, what used to be foreign to me has become familiar and even welcoming.

As a lover of music, I have always been fascinated by hymn histories. Hymns and songs of worship have the ability to distill the deep and weighty truths of Scripture down to an essence that we can carry with us each and every day of our lives. Knowing the stories behind those hymns, and the personal experiences that gave birth to the songs has always given me greater appreciation, encouragement, and desire to follow after the truths embedded in the music.

When Joseph Scriven wrote what would become “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” it came from a life that had known great sorrow and disappointment. As a very young man in Ireland in the early 1800s, he fell in love and was engaged to marry. Sadly, his beloved drowned in a river the day before they were to wed, a tragedy Joseph not only witnessed, but was also powerless to do anything to stop.
