We are quick to read the latest book on marriage, attend the marriage conference at church or even a couple's weekend away. We can even be intentional about being committed to and serving our spouse. But what we actually need more of, and what will significantly impact our relationship, is to take time to pray over our marriage. Even if you have the perfect marriage, and I don't know anyone who does, it still needs to be bathed in prayer!
If we are completely honest and transparent, we'll acknowledge the struggle when it comes to praying with our spouse and over our marriage. Most couples struggle in this area.
Every married couple needs to pray over their marriage. Nearly-weds can begin to pray before they are even married. Newlyweds certainly need it. We all need it!
Praying Over Our Marriage Begins at Home
Those entrenched in the marriage commitment, with the challenge of raising children and financial difficulties, need it like cake needs frosting! And the empty nesters, they still need to pray over their marriage as well. No matter what chapter of married life you find yourself in today, you need this!
Not only will prayer enrich marriages, it can even restore them!
So what kinds of things do I want to pray over my own marriage?
The world is watching our marriages, and they need to see them reflecting the love of God. They need to realize that a marriage with God at the center is different. Our marriage should bring glory to God. As we turn those chapters of nearly-wed, newlywed, and child rearing into chapters of empty-nesters we need His help.
Today I Am Praying"Lord help me to be the spouse who initiates and intentionally seeks to communicate, serve, and love. Help me to be the spouse I want and need in our relationship. Help me to put the needs of my spouse before my own. Help me to combat selfish desires and serve my spouse with joy. Show me each day how I can love my spouse more. Give me the desire and courage to do it! How to Pray for The Marriages Around Us
Those are some bold statements and pretty bold prayers. But I like being bold. I like being specific. It's easier to see answers to prayer if they are specific prayers, purposeful and direct.
So what about the marriages of those around us? Each of us has a circle of influence. Whether it be in our workplace, church, or community, we should pray for those marriages as well.
I feel it is our duty as Christian couples to present the world with a picture of God's unconditional love, grace, and mercy through our marriage.
