30 Prayers to Pray Over Your Marriage

30 Prayers to Pray Over Your Marriage
Love and marriage are as old as time. And like the Frank Sinatra song goes, "love and marriage, love and marriage, they go together like a horse and carriage..." they are meant for each other. God ordained marriage way back in Genesis. Thousands of years ago. It's the oldest institution still in existence.

There wasn't a photographer to catch the moment and there were no engagement photos either. No one had cake that night. Adam and Eve didn't spend their honeymoon on a cruise ship. Although, if they had waited about sixteen hundred years, they could have. Still, God ordained the union when He made a helpmeet for Adam from his very own rib. I love the thought of being  a  helpmeet to my spouse!

As we think about being a helpmeet, let's remind ourselves of the most impactful way we can grow our relationship with God and our spouse—that is through prayer.

We are quick to read the latest book on marriage, attend the marriage conference at church or even a couple's weekend away. We can even be intentional about being committed to and serving our spouse. But what we actually need more of, and what will significantly impact our relationship, is to take time to pray over our marriage. Even if you have the perfect marriage, and I don't know anyone who does, it still needs to be bathed in prayer!
If we are completely honest and transparent, we'll acknowledge the struggle when it comes to praying with our spouse and over our marriage. Most couples struggle in this area.
We even struggle in our individual prayer time. So I feel pretty confident in saying that most of us also struggle praying together as a couple.

In this post, we want to help you pray over your marriage, but not just your marriage. We want to help you also know how to pray over the marriages of those around you. It's important. We need to do this!

Society needs this. Today, we are seeing a societal breakdown like no other generation has seen. This breakdown begins with families
in homes just like ours. We need to be praying over our marriages, because society is depending on it!

We came across Tony Evan's 30 Days of Marriage Prayers a few years ago and used it as a model to create 30 days of Instagram posts. This led to our Praying Over Your Marriage Pinterest board. The prayers are meaningful and well thought out. You can download the free PDF below.

We hope this post provides you with a springboard for how to pray over your own marriage. It will also help you pray over the marriages of those in your circle of influence. Marriages of your immediate and extended family, coworkers, church and community all need prayer. Modify the prayers, as we did, to meet your own needs.
Every married couple needs to pray over their marriage. Nearly-weds can begin to pray before they are even married. Newlyweds certainly need it. We all need it!

Praying Over Our Marriage Begins at Home

Those entrenched in the marriage commitment, with the challenge of raising children and financial difficulties, need it like cake needs frosting! And the empty nesters, they still need to pray over their marriage as well. No matter what chapter of married life you find yourself in today, you need this!

Not only will prayer enrich marriages, it can even restore them!
So what kinds of things do I want to pray over my own marriage?
  • I want to continue to grow as a couple, loving God more, pursue Him as we also pursue each other.
  • I want our relationship with God and each other to always be a priority.
  • I want us to continue to love, cherish, value, encourage, respect, and nourish the relationship we have.
  • I want God to guard our eyes, thoughts and words.

The world is watching our marriages, and they need to see them reflecting the love of God. They need to realize that a marriage with God at the center is different. Our marriage should bring glory to God.

As we turn those chapters of nearly-wed, newlywed, and child rearing into chapters of empty-nesters we need His help.
  • To keep our focus on the things that truly matter.
  • To make Him our first love, and our spouse our second love.
  • To seek His kingdom and trust Him.
  • To continue pursuing God as a couple and our spouse as we did before we were married.
  • To love our spouse as God loves us—unconditionally, with second chances, and forgiveness when necessary.

Today I Am Praying

"Lord help me to be the spouse who initiates and intentionally seeks to communicate, serve, and love. Help me to be the spouse I want and need in our relationship. Help me to put the needs of my spouse before my own. Help me to combat selfish desires and serve my spouse with joy. Show me each day how I can love my spouse more. Give me the desire and courage to do it!

Help our marriage to be a safe place with gentle responses.

Help us to live with each other in an understanding way. Help us to study one another and seek to be understanding. Help us to do nothing that would hinder our prayers. Help us to be supportive of each other. Help us to have emotional intimacy, sharing past failures, current struggles and future hopes and dreams. Help us to be good listeners and be considerate of each other's needs.

Help us to be on a mission together, bold in the ways we love you and each other. Give us opportunities to share our story with others. Use our marriage to help those within our circle of influence grow in a knowledge of You and love for You.

God, I pray you would change the world through our marriage, starting right here in our own home." —In Jesus' name, amen.

How to Pray for The Marriages Around Us

Those are some bold statements and pretty bold prayers. But I like being bold. I like being specific. It's easier to see answers to prayer if they are specific prayers, purposeful and direct.

So what about the marriages of those around us?

Each of us has a circle of influence. Whether it be in our workplace, church, or community, we should pray for those marriages as well.
  • Pray that the marriages of those around you would thrive, and that they would see marriage as a gift from God.
  • Pray that those who are struggling or need restoration would be radically transformed by God and strengthened in a way that only He can do! We know with God anything is possible. So pray that He would do what’s impossible for man, but very possible for Him.
  • Pray that He will restore the broken marriages for the sake of the children, society and to the glory of God!
I feel it is our duty as Christian couples to present the world with a picture of God's unconditional love, grace, and mercy through our marriage.
