10 Affirmations of the Sovereignty of God

What is the sovereignty of God? First, let's define the word
"A deep belief in the sovereignty of God protects your heart from 10,000 different worries." —Erik Reed
What is the sovereignty of God?

First, let's define the word "sovereign." Sovereign has everything to do with power. When used in a sentence, the word often describes a person who has supreme power or authority.

The sovereignty of God is the fact that He is the Lord over all creation. As sovereign, He exercises His rule. This rule is exerted through God's authority as King of kings and Lord of lords. He ultimately controls all things, and that is important for us to remember, especially in the chaotic world we live in today.

God is present with us at all times and has said in His Word, "I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5b). This too is part of His sovereignty in that He is always actively involved in our lives even when we cannot see it or do not feel it. He is a living and active part of His creation.

Recently, I read the following from Erik Reed over on Twitter and wanted to share them with you today. I hope, when you read these 10 Affirmations of the Sovereignty of God, you are as encouraged as I was when I first read them.
Erik says, "A deep belief in the sovereignty of God protects your heart from 10,000 different worries."

But here are 10:

  1. That you’re just 1 accident of 8 Billion random people in the world. Nope. You’re not the random chance result of your parents reproductive organs. God determined to create you before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

  2. That your life has no purpose or meaning. Not only did God create you specifically, but on purpose, you are designed particularly from features, personality, temperament, giftings, location, and era of time (Psalm 139:13-14; Acts 17:26).

  3. That you’re going to miss God’s will for your life. You can make your plans, but the Lord determines your steps (Proverbs 16:9). Those steps are aligned for the purpose He made you for (Ephesians 2:10).

  4. That you’re going to lose God’s grace because you’ve messed up. For those in Christ Jesus, we have assurance of enduring to the end because He keeps us. “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” — Jesus (John 10:28).

  5. That your loved one is too far beyond God’s redemption. Nobody is beyond God’s grace. Jesus says “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37) They. Will. Come.

  6. That the darkness in the world will ultimately prevail. One day Jesus will end all suffering, sin, death, and darkness (Revelation 21:3-5). The darkness in the world will never overcome the light (John 1:5).

  7. That your suffering or pain is pointless. The Lord uses suffering to grow our character (Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-4) and teaches us to depend on Him (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). Joseph’s story (Genesis 37-40) shows how God always means our suffering for good, wise purposes.

  8. That the Earth is going to drift off its orbit, be destroyed by a giant meteor, or perish from global warming. This isn’t a political statement. It’s a reminder that God is over the fate of the planet. Nobody should lose sleep about the Earth’s annihilation. He’s got it.

  9. That you’re going to die before you’ve finished your race. Friends, you will not die a second sooner than the Lord intends (Psalm 139:16). Live a life worthy of your calling (Ephesians 4:1), run your race to win (1 Corinthians 9:24), and remember the time is short (James 4:13-15).

  10. That your prayers don’t matter. He knows everything you need before you ask, yet we are instructed to pray (Matthew 6:8-9). His sovereign authority over all things ensures there is nothing He can’t do (Ephesians 3:20-21). So pray with faith.

I am so grateful that our prayers are heard and matter to God. I am also grateful He tends to those things which concern me in wisdom and sovereignty, even if His response is different than I may have wanted. He does all things well and for our good. Blessings!

Your gratitude reflects a deep rooted and profound understanding of the nature of prayer and God's wisdom, Joanne. It's a beautiful acknowledgment that our prayers are heard and valued by a sovereign and wise God. Trusting in His perfect plan, even when it diverges from our own desires, is a testament to your faith. Indeed, He works all things for our good, even if His response may not align with our immediate expectations. May your journey of faith continue to be filled with blessings, and may you find peace in the knowledge that God's ways are always perfect. Blessings to you as well!

I especially like #9--my husband was just diagnosed with cancer (it's his third time), and I take comfort in God's sovereignty that the outcome will be to his glory.

I'm truly sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis, Anita. Facing such a challenging situation is undoubtedly difficult, and your perspective on finding comfort in God's sovereignty is both inspiring and profound. Trusting that, even in the midst of hardship, the outcome will ultimately bring glory to God reflects a deep faith and reliance on His wisdom.

May you and your husband experience strength, comfort, and peace during this trying time. Lean on each other, your support system, and your faith in God as you navigate this journey together. Sending prayers for healing, resilience, and the presence of God's grace throughout the process.

I never want to lose sight of the fact that God is always sovereignly in control of everything in my life, my family, and the world. It's so comforting to know that in this crazy and often wicked world in which we live. Thanks for sharing these beautiful affirmations and for hosting each week. Blessings!

Thanks for sharing. I particularly relate to number 5. I prayed for my athiest father for 16 years when he finally believed in God and accepted Christ as Savior and Lord.

What a powerful testimony of faith and perseverance, Karen!! Your experience of praying for your atheist father for 16 years and witnessing his eventual belief in God and acceptance of Christ is truly inspiring. It's a testament to the transformative power of prayer and the amazing work that God can do in the lives of those we care about.

Thank you for sharing this deeply personal and faith-filled journey. It has encouraged me for sure, and may it also encourage others who are praying for loved ones and facing their own challenges. Your story reflects the hope and impact of persistent prayer and God's incredible grace. Blessings to you and your father!
