Not Wordless Cards
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them for to such belongs the kingdom of Heaven.’” Matthew 19:14
Find the Wordless Cards here
First used by Charles Spurgeon in 1866, the Wordless Book has become a very popular tool, used all over the world, to explain the plan of salvation to children using the Gospel colors–Black, Red, White, Gold, and Green. The Gospel colors are a great way to lead a child to Christ. This method of evangelism has been so effective that there are now many variations available. One example is the Salvation Bracelet. Another example is the Not Wordless Cards.

The Not Wordless Cards are not only extremely easy to use, but they are also very effective in explaining the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. This guide will lead you in how to use the Not Wordless Cards.

How to Use

  1. Start by showing the child the five Not Wordless Cards. Flip through the cards and tell the child that this is a very special set of cards, and it tells a very important story using only colors and verses from God’s Word—the Bible.
  2. There are three Key Talking Points for each color that will help you explain the plan of salvation revealing the Gospel colors as your presentation proceeds.
  3. Use Questions to engage your listener and to check understanding.
  4. Use Bible Verses where appropriate, but don’t overload your listener with too many verses. Stick to the Key Talking Point of each Gospel color.

What to Say

Here are some Key Talking Points to cover as you present the Gospel using the Not Wordless Cards. You may need to tailor your Gospel presentation to suit the age of your audience.

BLACK

 Key Talking Points:
  1. The black card represents what prevents us from being with God in Heaven—our sin. Sins are the things we do that make God unhappy. Doing, saying, or even thinking bad things are sins. Telling lies, disobeying your parents, hurting others, and being selfish are examples of sins we commit. The Bible tells us that all of us have sinned.
  2. The punishment for our sin is that we cannot be with God in Heaven. Because of sin, our hearts are no longer clean. God is perfect. Perfectly good and perfectly clean. Because God is perfectly good and perfectly clean, He can only allow those with perfect and clean hearts into heaven.
  3. On our own, we cannot make our hearts clean. But God loves us so much that He provides a way for our hearts to be made perfect and clean.

Questions & Bible Verses: What are some things that you think of when you see the black card? Do you know what "sin" means? What were some of the things you have done that may have made God unhappy? If God can only allow those with perfect and clean hearts into Heaven, do you think you will be able to join God in Heaven?
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

RED

 Key Talking Points:
  1. The red color in the Not Wordless Card set represents the blood of Jesus—the only way our hearts can be made clean. God loves us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus is the baby born in a manger at Bethlehem. That’s what we celebrate at Christmas. But He was more than that, He was a man who was very different from any other person because Jesus is God, and never sinned.
  2. Jesus came from Heaven to earth with the sole purpose to take the punishment for our sins. Instead of us being punished, He took our place. Jesus died on the cross at Calvary so that all the wrong things that we have done can be forgiven. And on the third day, after Jesus was crucified and died for our sins at Calvary, Jesus became alive again—He arose from the grave. We call this the resurrection. It’s what we celebrate at Easter.
  3. When Jesus took the punishment for our sins, something really amazing happened!

Questions & Bible Verses: What does the color red remind you of? Do you know who Jesus is? Do you know why we celebrate Christmas and Easter? Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins?
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“But God raised Him from the dead, and for many days He appeared to those who had come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now His witnesses to the people.” Acts 13:30-31

WHITE

 Key Talking Points:
  1. The amazing thing is that our hearts can now be made clean—even cleaner than this clean, white card. Turn to the back of the card.
  2. But before our hearts can be made clean, we need to admit that we have sinned and ask God to forgive us, and believe that Jesus died on the cross to be punished instead of us. After we admit that we are sinners and believe that Jesus died for our sins, then we simply invite Jesus into our lives to help us turn away from sin.
  3. When we do these things sincerely, our hearts will be made clean—whiter than snow.

Questions & Bible Verses: Do you know what amazing thing happened at Calvary? Do you want your heart to be made clean? Do you want to ask God to forgive you of your sins? Do you want to invite Jesus into your life?
"Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." Psalm 51:7

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

GOLD

 Key Talking Points:
  1. Gold reminds me of heaven. Heaven is a wonderful place. There’s no sickness, no pain, and no hunger No one ever dies there. Everyone is perfectly happy. But that’s not the most wonderful thing about Heaven. The most wonderful thing about Heaven is that it is God's home. God loves us very much, and He wants us to be with Him in Heaven someday—forever! He’s building a home for us there. But there is something that prevents us from being with God in His home in Heaven, and that something is our sin.
  2. When our hearts are made clean from our sin, we can have a relationship with God. We become God’s child and we can call God our Father. You will still have earthly parents, but God will be your Heavenly Father. Then we can be with God in His home in Heaven someday.
  3. Invite the child to sincerely pray for forgiveness from their sin and for Jesus to come into his/her life. (There’s a simple prayer prompt at the end.) Then explain that saying this prayer sincerely means: You are truly sorry for all the wrong things you have done. You truly believe that Jesus took the punishment for your sins. You truly want to start a relationship with Jesus to help you turn from all the wrong things you have done and do what is right.

Questions & Bible Verses: What does the color gold remind you of? What do you think Heaven is like? Would you like to have a relationship with God? Would you like to one day be with God in Heaven?
“And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.” Revelation 21:21

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

GREEN

 Key Talking Points:
  1. The green Not Wordless Card reminds us of things that grow, like grass, leaves, trees, and flowers.
  2. After praying for forgiveness and for Jesus to come into your life, you now have a special relationship with Him.
  3. It is important that you grow in your relationship with Jesus. You can do this by talking to God (praying), reading God’s Word (the Bible), and obeying Him.

Questions & Bible Verses: What are some things that are green? Do you know what happens when you pray for forgiveness and invite Jesus into your life? Do you know what you need to do next?
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." 2 Peter 3:18

Simple Prayer Prompt

Dear Jesus, Thank you for loving me. I know that I have sinned. I have done things that are wrong. I believe that You died on the cross to take the punishment for my sins. Please forgive all of my sins and make my heart clean. Please come into my life and help me turn away from doing wrong. Thank you that with a clean heart, I can have a relationship with You now and will one day be with You in Heaven. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen
