These sermons were so influential that they have been recorded in the two-volume set Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, 1730-1805. These pastors understood that biblical literacy was vital for making wise decisions in the voting booth, and we should follow their example by using Scripture as the lens through which we view our world, including politics.
"God’s Word is the standard by which we must evaluate all things, and that includes matters in the political realm. Through our votes, we can be an influence for righteousness—we can let God’s voice be heard in today’s culture." —Gary Hamrick
One common misconception today is the belief that the church should stay out of politics due to "separation of church and state." However, this phrase doesn’t appear in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or Bill of Rights. It originated in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, emphasizing that the First Amendment was designed to protect the church from government interference, not the other way around. Unfortunately, over time, this concept has been twisted to intimidate Christians and discourage them from applying their faith in the public square. But as ambassadors for Christ, we’re called to be salt and light in every aspect of society, including politics.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
Voting is more than a civic duty; it's a biblical act. By aligning our choices with God’s Word, we reflect His will in the world. While no candidate or policy will perfectly mirror Scripture, our votes can still influence our nation for good. As Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."

Consider gifting a copy to a friend, family member, co-worker, or even your pastor and help other discover how we, as believers, can play a transformative role in our nation's future.
How can Christians balance the call to be "in the world but not of the world" while actively engaging in political matters that shape society?
Gary Hamrick is senior pastor at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia.
