A Devotion and Longing for God
Psalm 48

The story of the Sons of Korah is one of remarkable redemption. Their ancestor, Korah, rebelled against God’s appointed leadership and perished under dramatic judgment (Num. 16). But “the sons of Korah did not die” (Num. 26:11). They lived—and from their lineage came some of the most heartfelt expressions of longing, worship, and devotion in the Psalms.

Though Korah sought to approach God on his own terms, his descendants teach us, through inspired song, what it means to approach God with reverence, humility, and awe. Let’s journey through the 11 psalms attributed to the Sons of Korah—Psalms 42, 44–49, 84, 85, 87, and 88. These psalms reflect a deep yearning for God’s presence and a resilient trust in His goodness, even in times of sorrow and silence.

From “As the deer pants for the water” (Psalm 42) to “How lovely is Your dwelling place” (Psalm 84), their words invite us to examine our own hearts. Do we long for God in this way? Do we worship Him as holy? Can we trust His redeeming work, even in our failures?

Join us each week, August 5–October 14, as we explore 11 psalms and the legacy of worship that grew from these once-rebellious roots. Their story reminds us that no one is too far gone for God to redeem and use for His glory—The Sons of Korah: A Devotion and Longing for God.
“Great is the Lord [Yahweh] and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King. Within her citadels God has made Himself known as a fortress.

For behold, the kings assembled; they came on together. As soon as they saw it, they were astounded; they were in panic; they took to flight. Trembling took hold of them there, anguish as of a woman in labor. By the east wind You shattered the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of Hosts [Jehovah Sabaoth], in the city of our God, which God will establish forever. Selah

We have thought on Your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of Your temple. As Your name, O God, so Your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness. Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of Your judgments!

Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.” Psalm 48:1-14
The sixth psalm, attributed to the sons of Korah, Psalm 48, is a hymn of praise, devotion, and confidence in the Lord’s unshakable presence among His people. It invites us to lift our eyes beyond our daily, earthly struggles and fix them on the greatness of God, who reigns as King in His holy city.

The psalm begins with the declaration: “Great is the Lord [Yahweh] and greatly to be praised in the city of our God” (Psalm 48:1)! Mount Zion, God’s holy mountain, is described as the joy of the whole earth. It wasn’t merely about geography—it symbolized God’s dwelling among His people. To the sons of Korah, Zion represented safety, beauty, and the nearness of Yahweh. In the same way, for us today, God’s presence is our true refuge and fortress (Psalm 48:3).

When foreign kings assembled against Zion, they were struck with fear and fled in panic (Psalm 48:4–7). Their strength collapsed before the Almighty. The imagery of shattered ships of Tarshish reminds us that no earthly power can withstand God’s sovereign hand. This is a call for us to trust not in human might or wisdom, but in God’s eternal protection.

Verses 9–10 draw us into the temple, where the psalmist reflects on God’s steadfast love: “We have thought on Your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of Your temple.” Here, worship is more than ritual—it is a deep meditation on who God is. His name and His praise extend to the ends of the earth, and His right hand is full of righteousness. This is devotion—pausing to dwell on the love, justice, and faithfulness of our God.

The psalm then calls Zion and the daughters of Judah to rejoice (Psalm 48:11). God’s judgments, though sometimes hard to understand, are always righteous and lead His people to joy. Worship is not passive—it’s active rejoicing in the truth of God’s character and His perfect rule.

The psalm closes with a stirring call: “Walk about Zion, go around her… that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever” (Psalm 48:12-14). The sons of Korah remind us that devotion to God isn’t just personal—it’s a generational commitment. We are called to reflect on His faithfulness and pass that testimony down to those who come after us. Our longing for God becomes a legacy when we share His greatness with the next generation.
Psalm 48 paints a vivid picture of devotion and longing for God as it teaches us to:
  • Recognize His greatness.
  • Trust in His protection.
  • Rejoice in His righteousness.
  • Proclaim His faithfulness.
It reminds us that God Himself is the fortress of His people.

As we meditate on this psalm, let’s remember that our true Zion is found in Christ, who makes His dwelling with us. He is our fortress, our joy, and our eternal guide. May our hearts, like those of the sons of Korah, long for Him with devotion and praise.
In what ways does the image of God as both fortress and guide in Psalm 48 invite you to trust Him for your security and direction, instead of relying on the unstable powers of this world?

Thanks be to God for the genetic 180-degree turn in the Korah family! This gives us so much hope for prodigals—AND for our own failures.

Yes. Michele!! :) Isn’t it amazing how God can completely redeem a family line and write a brand-new story? The turnaround in Korah's family is such a beautiful reminder that no prodigal—or failure—is ever beyond His reach. So much hope!
