The Feast of Trumpets

4/15/2025

The trumpet will sound... are you ready? The Feast of Trumpets (#RoshHashanah) isn’t just an ancient celebration--it’s a powerful #prophetic picture of #Christ’s return! In the #OldTestament, it was a call to repentance. In the #NewTestament, it points to the #Rapture--when #Jesus will return with the sound of a #trumpet to gather His people. This #feast reminds us to stay awake, be ready, and live expectantly for the return of our King. Explore the #biblical roots and what it means for us today.
The Bible outlines seven major feasts given to Israel by God in Leviticus 23. These feasts were more than just religious observances—they were divine appointments that pointed to God's plan of redemption. Each feast carries deep spiritual significance, with many fulfilled in Jesus Christ, while others still point toward His second coming.

The seven feasts, outlined in Leviticus 23, are divided into two seasons—Spring and Fall. The Spring feasts (1-4) were fulfilled in Jesus' first coming. They were prophetic shadows of His death, burial, resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Let's take a deep dive into the Feast of Trumpets and see how this biblical feast points to God's redemptive plan.

The Feast of Trumpets is a call to repentance and a prophetic picture of the return of Jesus Christ. In 2025, the Feast of Trumpet takes place from sunset on September 22 to sunset on September 24. This feast, also known as Yom Teruah or Rosh Hashanah, is one of the seven biblical feasts given by God in Leviticus 23. It marks the beginning of the Fall Feasts and carries with it deep prophetic significance, especially regarding Christ’s second coming.
"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the Lord.'” Leviticus 23:23-25
Let's look at the biblical foundations of the Feast of Trumpets. In the Old Testament we see this feast as a holy day of blowing trumpets.
  • In Leviticus 23:24, we read where God says to Moses, "Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation."
  • Numbers 29:1-2 tells us, "You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets, and you shall offer a burnt offering, for a pleasing aroma to the Lord..." This sacred day was to be observed with the blowing of trumpets (shofars), offerings to the Lord, and a time of rest and renewal.
  • In Nehemiah 8, we learn that during this feast, the Israelites rediscovered the Law, resulting in heartfelt repentance and spiritual revival: "Do not mourn nor weep... for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:9-10

So what is the symbolism of the trumpet or shofar?

It held great spiritual significance:
  • Repentance (Joel 2:1)
  • Gathering of God’s people (Numbers 10:2-10)
  • Coronation of a King (1 Kings 1:34, 39)
  • Warning of Judgment (Amos 3:6)
In all of these themes, we see the spiritual significance and the foreshadowing of the return of Jesus Christ—the Second Coming.

How do we see the fulfillment of the Feast of Trumpets in the New Testament? We see it in Christ’s imminent return.
  • We see its fulfillment in 1 Thessalonians 4, “For the Lord Himself will descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first…” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
  • 1 Corinthians 15 speaks to the last trumpet: “At the last trumpet… the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.” 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
  • And, Matthew 24:30-31 tells us of a great sound of a trumpet: “And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect…” The trumpet blast signals the Rapture and the return of Jesus Christ for His waiting Bride.

The Feast of Trumpets is a call to repentance and readiness. The feast initiates ten days of reflection leading up to the Day of Atonement. Jesus’ parables in Matthew 25 urge us to be spiritually prepared for His second coming.

So what is the spiritual significance for us as believers? It's a call to wake up! In Romans 13:11 we read "It is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed." The trumpet calls us to spiritual alertness and renewed devotion to Christ.

The Feast of Trumpets is a prophetic foreshadowing of the Rapture. Just as trumpets gathered Israel, Jesus will gather His Church with the sound of a trumpet. This feast is also the prophetic foreshadowing of the coronation of the King. In Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah celebrates God’s Kingship. The Feast of Trumpets prophetically points to Christ returning as King of kings (Rev. 19:16).
The Feast of Trumpets is more than just a historical observance. It is a divine appointment that calls us to repent, watch, worship, and prepare. It reminds us to live in holiness, stay spiritually awake, and eagerly anticipate the glorious return of our King, Jesus Christ. Let the sound of the trumpet stir your heart to readiness!
How would your daily life look different if you truly lived in anticipation of the trumpet sound and Christ’s return?
