Sweeter Than Honey: God Was Not Done With Paul

What if we spent a few quiet moments with God each morning? What if we were intentional about making time for it? And what if we committed to doing that all year long—only to find that by the end of the year, we had read the entirety of God’s Word—His love letter to us?

How many times have you, on January 1, resolved to read the Bible from cover to cover in a year? I’ve made that commitment more times than I can count—and I’ve failed more times than I’d like to admit. But a few years ago, I tried something different. I used a one-year, chronological order of book authorship Bible Reading Itinerary.

Did you know that Genesis wasn’t the first book of the Bible written? While these plans can vary—since it’s impossible to pinpoint exact dates for some books—the plan I used began with the book of Job.

Let me introduce you to Sweeter Than Honey: A 365-Day Devotional Journey, a devotional patterned after that Bible Reading Itinerary. On Tuesdays, through the end of the year, I’d love for you to join me as we journey through parts of Sweeter Than Honey together!

As we look ahead to 2026, why not make a plan now—either on your own or with your small group, Sunday school class, or women’s Bible study—to read through the Bible together using the Sweeter Than Honey Bible Reading Plan? Imagine the growth, encouragement, and community that could come from walking through God’s Word side by side for an entire year!

Acts 23-25: God Was Not Done With Paul​

Paul stood before the council in Jerusalem, as well as the high priest Ananias, the Sadducees and Pharisees, soldiers, and, no doubt, many other onlookers. All the time, he continued to testify of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. He was imprisoned in Jerusalem, but God was not done with Paul. 

"The following night the Lord stood by him [Paul] and said, ‘Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about Me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.’” (Acts 23:11)

Sometimes, God puts us in a position that seems to be the end of all ends—but maybe that’s just the beginning. Paul seems to be nearing the end of his life. I believe he felt that, too. But God assures Paul that He is not done with him. Just as Paul testified about Jesus in Jerusalem, he must also testify in Rome.

The Jews plotted to kill Paul. There were more than 40 who conspired against him. The Bible tells us they even went to the chief priests and elders with their case against Paul. The chief priests and elders made an oath to fast until Paul was dead. Because of their plot, Paul finds himself standing before Felix the Governor, his wife Drusilla, and then Porcius Festus the Governor. 

Finally, verse 23 of chapter 25 tells us that “Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city.” Paul also stands before King Agrippa, Bernice, all of those in the audience hall, including military tribunes and the prominent men of the city. Under any other set of circumstances, Paul would not have had so great an opportunity.

What seemed to be the end for Paul turns out to be the climax of his life of abandonment to Jesus Christ! Paul is welcome to testify of repentance and the resurrection of Jesus Christ in all of these places in front of all of these people who were willing (or unwilling) listeners. 

Friend, God has a plan for your life. He is not done with you. Many times that plan does not look like our plan, but it is God’s perfect plan, accompanied by His perfect timing!

Today, let’s record a brief prayer acknowledging the fact that God is not done with us, and surrendering to Him in whatever way He chooses to use us:

​When circumstances feel like a dead end, how might God actually be positioning you—just as He did with Paul—for a new opportunity to testify of His faithfulness?
