Just as God reveals Himself progressively in His Word, He reveals Himself progressively in our lives.
From Creation to Relationship
We begin with Elohim (Genesis 1:1), our Creator God—the One who speaks all things into existence. At this stage, we see His power, His authority, His majesty. He is the God who creates. But God does not remain distant. He becomes Yahweh (Genesis 2:4), our Lord Jehovah—the covenant-keeping God who draws near. Suddenly, creation becomes relationship. The One who formed us now desires to walk with us. From Authority to Intimacy As we continue, we encounter El Elyon (Genesis 14:18–20), the Most High God—holy, sovereign, unmatched. Then Adonai (Genesis 15:2), our Lord and Master, calls us to surrender and trust. With El Shaddai (Genesis 17:1–8), we discover that the God who rules over all is also the One who is enough. He is all-sufficient, meeting us in our weakness. And then comes El Olam (Genesis 21:33), the Everlasting God—reminding us that the One who sustains us today will remain faithful forever. From Provision to Healing The journey continues with Jehovah Jireh (Genesis 22:14), the Lord who provides. We learn that God sees our needs and meets them perfectly. But provision is not the end of the story. We are introduced to Jehovah Rapha (Exodus 15:26), the Lord who heals. The God who provides for our needs also restores our brokenness—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. From Victory to Devotion In Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15–16), the Lord our Banner, we see that God fights for us. His banner over us is love, and His presence brings victory. Then comes Qanna (Exodus 20:5), the God who is jealous for us—not in insecurity, but in holy, covenantal love. He desires our whole hearts, not partial devotion. From Transformation to Peace Through Jehovah Mekoddishkem (Leviticus 20:8), the Lord who sanctifies, we begin to understand that our relationship with God changes us. He sets us apart, shaping us into His likeness. And as He sanctifies us, He also becomes Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24), the Lord our Peace. Not a peace the world gives, but a deep, unshakable calm that flows from His presence. From Power to Guidance With Jehovah Sabaoth (1 Samuel 1:3), the Lord of Hosts, we are reminded of His supreme authority over all heavenly armies. He is powerful beyond measure. Yet this powerful God becomes personal in Jehovah Raah (Psalm 23), our Shepherd—guiding, leading, restoring, and caring for us with tenderness. From Righteousness to Presence Through Jehovah Tsidkenu (Jeremiah 23:6), the Lord our Righteousness, we see that He not only leads us—He covers us. He gives us what we could never achieve on our own: His righteousness. And finally, we arrive at Jehovah Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35)—the Lord is There. This is where all the stepping stones lead. Not just to knowledge. Not just to understanding. But to presence. What makes this journey so beautiful and powerful is not just the names themselves—but the order in which they are revealed. Each name builds upon the last:
I do not believe this is accidental—I believe it is intentional. God, in His wisdom, reveals His character in a way that mirrors how we come to know Him in our own lives. We often begin by recognizing His power, then His provision, then His healing, and eventually His nearness. We don’t learn it all at once. We learn it in steps.
This is why I wrote 16 Names of God—to walk through these stepping stones in the order they are given in Scripture, and to invite others to see what I have come to believe: That God’s names are not just titles—they are invitations. Invitations to know Him more deeply. To trust Him more fully. To experience Him more personally.
From Elohim to Jehovah Shammah, we are not just studying names. We are discovering His heart. And in the end, we find the greatest truth of all: He is not distant. He is not hidden. He is there.
If God reveals Himself step by step through His names, which “step” are you standing on right now—and is He inviting you to trust Him for something deeper?
