Redeeming Today for God’s Glory

"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind. Let it be something good!"

I recently read that quote, and it made me pause. What a sobering reminder—each day is a gift from God, and how we spend it matters eternally. We are exchanging a portion of our life for what we do today. What, then, are we leaving behind?

Scripture urges us to live with this kind of intentionality. The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:15–16, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Other translations render “making the best use of the time” as redeeming the time—a strong phrase that conveys both value and urgency. We are stewards of our time, and each new day is an opportunity to glorify God with the life we’ve been entrusted. With that in mind, let's look at four reminders that can help us to redeem today for God’s glory.

Every Day is a Gift
The psalmist reminds us in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” The fact that we woke up this morning is no small thing. God, in His grace, has given us another sunrise. And not just for busyness or productivity’s sake, but for a purpose: to know Him and make Him known.
What Are You Exchanging Your Life For?
“This day will be gone forever,” the quote says. That’s a sobering truth. As James writes, “You are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). We often act as though we have unlimited days ahead—but honestly, friend, even though it might feel that way, we don't. And today matters! Every conversation, every act of kindness, every moment spent in prayer or in the Word has eternal value.
Let It Be Something Good
The Apostle Paul encourages believers in Galatians 6:9-10, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone…” Doing good isn’t just about big, public acts of service. It’s the quiet obedience. The unseen sacrifices. The faithful prayer. The Gospel-centered encouragement you give a friend. These are the things that echo in eternity.
Living for What Lasts
Ultimately, the only “good” that will truly remain is what was done in Christ and for Him. 1 Corinthians 3:12-14 speaks of our lives being tested like fire—some things will last, others will burn away. So how do we live a life that leaves something behind? We walk in the Spirit. We keep our eyes on Jesus. And we invest in eternal things—people, truth, love, and the Kingdom of God.

Begin again today. Whether yesterday was marked by distraction or devotion, you have this moment. This day. A fresh start. So begin again. Choose to live today with purpose. Make it count not just in the eyes of the world, but in the eyes of your Savior. Because today—this very day—you are giving your life for something. Let it be something good. Let it be something godly.
