Prodigal Prayers: Week 30

Prodigal Prayers: Week 30
Welcome, friend.

If you’re here, it’s likely because you love someone who has wandered—or because your own heart knows what it feels like to wait, hope, and pray through the ache of distance. You’ve prayed. You’ve wept. You’ve waited. And today, once again, you are choosing to press in.

In 2026, we are walking this road together.

Each Tuesday, we gather here to work through Prodigal Prayers: 52 Weeks of Praying Over the Prodigal—one week at a time, one Scripture, one prayer, one promise.

There is no rushing here and no falling behind. Come when you can. Stay as long as you need. This is a place for steady faith, honest prayers, and hope that is anchored in our faithful God and refuses to give up.
Prodigal Prayers
This journey is rooted in the rhythm of Prayer, Praise, and Promise—a reminder that God is our refuge, our joy, and the faithful Keeper of every soul. As we lift our prodigals before Him, we also allow His Word to strengthen our hearts in the waiting.

Your prayers matter, friend. Your faith is not in vain. The Father still calls His children by name, and His arms remain open.

I hope you'll also join us over in the private
Prodigal Prayers Facebook group and walk this journey with others who believe in the power of prayer.

Let’s begin again today—trusting God together.

A Prayer for Calm

When praying over our prodigal, the passage of Scripture in Luke 8:22-25 inspires us to remain calm and offers a profound parallel to Jesus calming the storm. When we pray for someone who has turned away from the faith, we often feel like the disciples in the boat—fearful and overwhelmed by the stormy circumstances surrounding our loved one. This passage reminds us that, just as Jesus was with His disciples in their moment of crisis, He is with us as we pray.

First, we must trust in Jesus' presence and acknowledge His presence in our prayers. Just as He was physically in the boat with His disciples, He is spiritually with us as we intercede for our prodigal. The disciples' initial panic reflects our own fear when we see our loved ones struggling spiritually. However, knowing that Jesus is present reassures us that we are not alone in our prayers. His presence should bolster our faith, reminding us that He hears us and is actively working, even when it seems like He is silent or "asleep."

In this passage, Jesus questioned the disciples' faith after calming the storm, challenging them to trust in Him despite their fears. This is a powerful lesson for us. We must continue to have faith amid the storms of life. When praying over our prodigal, it’s easy for us to focus on the visible storm—the behaviors, the rejections, the seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Yet, Jesus calls us to focus on Him and His promises and remain calm knowing He is in control. Faith means trusting in Jesus' ability to bring peace and transformation, even when the situation seems hopeless.
Never forget the authority of Jesus, friend! The disciples marveled at His authority over the wind and waves, recognizing His divine power. In our big bold prayers over our prodigal, we must recognize Jesus' authority over every situation, including the heart and soul of our prodigal. He commands the elements of the physical world, and He also has authority over the spiritual realm. When we pray, we do so with the confidence that Jesus can calm the storm within our loved one, bringing them back to faith and wholeness, and He can calm the storm within us as well!

Praying over our prodigal, or intercessory prayer, is an act of faith that aligns us with God’s will. As we pray, we are invited to participate in God’s redemptive work. We may not see immediate results like the disciples, but our faith assures us that Jesus is at work. We pray persistently, believing that God’s timing is perfect and His power is sufficient. We also pray with expectation. The disciples were astonished when Jesus calmed the storm, but our prayers should be filled with the expectation that Jesus will move—He WILL calm the storm! Expectation is an extension of our faith, believing that Jesus can act and He WILL act. Our prayers should reflect a confident hope in God’s power to bring the prodigal back to Himself, trusting that He is already working in ways we cannot see.

When praying over our prodigal, remember the lessons from Jesus calming the storm: acknowledge His presence, maintain faith amid the storm, recognize His authority, engage in intercessory prayer with faith, and pray with expectation. By doing so, we honor God and align ourselves with His heart for redemption and restoration; as we do these things, we can remain calm amidst the storm.
Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a heavy heart, lifting up my prodigal to you in prayer. Just as the disciples were overwhelmed by the storm, I am overwhelmed by the turmoil in my prodigal's life. Yet I trust in Your presence, knowing You are with me as I pray. You were in the boat with the disciples during their moment of crisis, and I believe You are here with me now. Your presence reassures me that I am not alone in this journey, and Your love for my prodigal is even greater than mine. I believe that. Increase my faith, Lord, and help me to trust in Your authority over every situation. You calmed the storm with just a word, demonstrating Your power over nature. I believe You have the power to calm the storm in my prodigal's life. Speak peace into their heart, Lord. Bring clarity where there is confusion, hope where there is despair, and healing where there is hurt. Help me to maintain my faith amid the storm. I find it easy to focus on the visible struggles and behaviors, but I choose to focus on You and Your promises instead. Strengthen my faith and give me the patience to wait on Your perfect timing and Your perfect way.

Lord, I recognize Your authority over my physical and all spiritual realms. You command the elements, and You have authority over the heart and soul of my prodigal. I pray with confidence, believing that You can bring transformation and restoration. I pray boldly and persistently, aligning my heart with Your will. Your Word encourages us to pray without ceasing, and I commit to interceding for my prodigal faithfully. Fill me with the expectation that You are at work, even when I can't see it.

Lord, let my prayers be filled with confident hope in Your power to bring my prodigal back to You. I trust that You are already working in ways I cannot see, and I believe that You will move in their life.

Thank You for hearing my prayer. Thank You for Your unwavering love and faithfulness. I rest in Your peace, knowing that You are in control.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
When you are praying for your prodigal and the storm seems to continue, are you more focused on the size of the storm—or on the power and presence of the One who is in the boat?

So good to be reminded that when we pray, we have God's undivided attention.

Absolutely, Michele—what a comforting truth that is. It’s incredible to remember that the Creator of the universe isn’t distracted or distant when we pray; He’s fully present, listening with love and intention. That kind of attention changes how we approach prayer—it becomes less about striving and more about resting in His presence. So thankful that we’re never overlooked or unheard by Him!
