That calling comes with challenges, especially in a world full of distractions and opposing voices. But we’re not alone. God, in His great wisdom, has given us the book of Proverbs—a rich source of truth, character-building guidance, and daily encouragement.
Let’s lean into His Word together this summer and cover our children in Scripture-rooted prayer. "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother....Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart." Proverbs 29:15, 17
Why Proverbs?
While there are countless parenting books out there, none compare to the timeless, wisdom-packed truths found in the book of Proverbs. This divinely inspired book serves as God’s blueprint for raising children who grow into wise, godly adults. When we read, study, teach—and most importantly, pray—the truths of Proverbs over our children, we invite God’s Word to shape their hearts and minds from the inside out.
As we pray through Proverbs over our children this summer, we’ll journey through an A-to-Z list of important life topics—from dealing with fear to developing a strong work ethic. Each week, we’ll focus on a few key issues, along with supporting Scripture to guide our prayers. Let’s get started and invite God to do a powerful work in our children’s hearts!
SCHOOL, SHARING, TATTLING, and TEASING
SCHOOL
I love this passage in Proverbs that clearly lays out the lifelong blessings of finding wisdom! “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens.” Proverbs 3:13-19 If your kiddo is struggling with their school work because of a lack of preparation or they see no value in getting good grades and learning, have them write out, meditate on, and memorize this passage. SHARING Sharing can be a real problem, not just for the toddler, but for our elementary-age and older children as well. Proverbs 11:24-26 tells us that, “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.” We love our stuff, don’t we?! We hold tightly to it, but who really owns it? God! He is the Giver of good things. It’s His blessing that allows us to have what we have and that may be much or it may be little, but whatever it is, it is from God. Mama, let’s pray today over our children and their school work and also that they learn to hold very loosely to their possessions. TATTLING Sometimes, there’s a good reason to “tell what we know” and sometimes, there’s a good reason to keep our mouths shut. Discernment between the two is a precious commodity! “Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.” Proverbs 20:19 No one wants to be associated with a babbler—one who tells all just to tell all. We don’t want to be like this and we don’t want our kiddos to be like this either. Discernment and discretion are important character traits. We want to display these traits in our own lives and we want our children to possess them as well. Today, let’s pray that when it comes to tattling, knowing when to tell and when to keep their mouths shut, our children have discernment and discretion. TEASING Teasing, or bullying as we so often call it these days, is not new to man. Unfortunately, man has made fun of, teased, and bullied each other since the beginning of our time. “Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.” Prov. 11:12 “Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 17:5 It’s a real shame though because we are all made by the same God, in His image! Yet, we choose to belittle and mock each other. Let’s pray today mama that our children will not tease or bully others. A bully lacks sense, ultimately insults God, and will not go unpunished, Proverbs tells us. “…but a man of understanding remains silent” (11:12). A Prayer for School, Sharing, Tattling, and Teasing in the Heart of my ChildHeavenly Father,
How might your child’s character—and your own—be transformed if you consistently prayed the wisdom of Proverbs over their daily challenges and choices?
