That calling comes with challenges, especially in a world full of distractions and opposing voices. But we’re not alone. God, in His great wisdom, has given us the book of Proverbs—a rich source of truth, character-building guidance, and daily encouragement.
Let’s lean into His Word together this summer and cover our children in Scripture-rooted prayer. "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother....Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart." Proverbs 29:15, 17
Why Proverbs?
While there are countless parenting books out there, none compare to the timeless, wisdom-packed truths found in the book of Proverbs. This divinely inspired book serves as God’s blueprint for raising children who grow into wise, godly adults. When we read, study, teach—and most importantly, pray—the truths of Proverbs over our children, we invite God’s Word to shape their hearts and minds from the inside out.
As we pray through Proverbs over our children this summer, we’ll journey through an A-to-Z list of important life topics—from dealing with fear to developing a strong work ethic. Each week, we’ll focus on a few key issues, along with supporting Scripture to guide our prayers. Let’s get started and invite God to do a powerful work in our children’s hearts!
OBEDIENCE, POPULARITY, and PRAYER
OBEDIENCE
Proverbs 5 describes a man who is caught in adultery. The chapter begins with this warning: “My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding” (5:1). However, this man was not attentive to the wisdom given him. He did not incline his ear to the understanding available to him. The result was a loss of honor, years, strength, and the fruit of his labors. Attentiveness to wisdom and understanding go hand-in-hand with obedience. The lack of attentiveness to wisdom and understanding will reap much regret. Proverbs 5:12-13 tells us that at the end of his life he groans and says: “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors.” This man hated discipline. He wanted to do his own thing, go his own way. He did not think about the consequences. But now, at the end of his life, there is much regret over his foolish decisions. Clearly, he had the opportunity to embrace the wisdom and understanding available to him, but he did not, and now there is much sorrow. Discipline comes into our lives in many forms. It may be from God for wrong decisions we make, like David and Bathsheba when they lost their first-born son (2 Samuel 12:16-23). It may come in the form of a reprimand at work. Our kiddos experience discipline too from different avenues—from us, their parents, from school, on a sports team they are a member of. Like discipline, wisdom can come into our lives in many forms as well. The Bible says that discipline is for our good. Let’s pray today mama that we, and our children, will embrace the value of the wisdom of discipline available to us and not hate or despise it. POPULARITY It’s so easy to rate your popularity level these days with social media. We, as parents, can even fall into this trap! But this is not where we find our true worth, is it? Of course, we realize that, but do our kiddos? Proverbs 22:1-2 tells us that, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.” Our true worth, our value, is found in what our Father God says we are—not in social media. When you catch your children stiving for popularity, remind them of what our God says they are. He says you are:
PRAYER Prayer, I believe, is the single most powerful tool in our Christian toolbelt, yet ironically, it is at the same time the most under-utilized tool. How very unfortunate! "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to Him." Proverbs 15:8 Our prayer life reflects the relationship we have with Jesus Christ. The same goes for our children. I want that relationship to be strong—for myself and my children! Today mama, let’s pray that our children realize their value in Jesus Christ and cultivate a relationship with Him through a consistent prayer life. A Prayer for the Heart of my Child When it Comes to Obedience, Popularity, and their own Prayer LifeHeavenly Father,
How might your child’s understanding of obedience, identity, and prayer change if they truly saw these through the lens of Proverbs and God's unchanging truth?

Grandchild #8 was born last week, which leads me to ask why I'm not spending MORE time in praying for the children God is gifting to our family!

Congratulations, Michele, on grandchild #8—what a beautiful blessing from the Lord!! :) Your heart to pray more for the precious children God is adding to your family is such a powerful reminder of the calling we have as parents and grandparents. Each prayer you lift is a seed sown into their future, and there's no greater legacy than covering them in God’s Word. May He strengthen and guide you as you pray Proverbs over their lives—what a gift you're giving them!
