“O Lord God of Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, to hear the prayer of Your servant that I now pray before You day and night for the people of Israel Your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against You. Even I and my father's house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that You commanded Your servant Moses. Remember the word that You commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of Heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make My name dwell there.’ They are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand. O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who delight to fear Your name, and give success to Your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Nehemiah 1:5-11
In his prayer, Nehemiah acknowledged God's greatness and faithfulness, calling Him the "great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love" (1:5). By doing so, he reminded himself and others that God remains faithful, even when His people are not.
Nehemiah didn’t shy away from addressing the root cause of Jerusalem's situation—sin. He confessed the sins of his people, his family, and himself, acknowledging that their failure to follow God’s commandments had led to their downfall (1:6-7). This humility is key. Before asking God to intervene, Nehemiah first sought to repent and align himself with God’s will. This shows that repentance and self-examination are crucial steps when seeking God’s help in times of need. God’s Promises as the Foundation for Prayer In verses 8-9, Nehemiah reminded God of His own promises, specifically His words to Moses that even if His people were scattered due to their disobedience, God would gather them back if they returned to Him. Nehemiah wasn’t just asking God to act out of the blue—he was standing on God’s Word, trusting that God would be faithful to His promises. When we pray, Nehemiah teaches us the importance of grounding our requests in God’s Word. By doing this, we show God that we trust in His character and promises, and it builds our own faith as we remind ourselves of what He has said. Boldness in Requesting God’s Favor The final part of Nehemiah’s prayer (1:11) is a bold request for God’s favor. Nehemiah was the cupbearer to the king, and he knew he would soon need to approach the king to seek help for his mission to rebuild Jerusalem. In ancient times, approaching the king with such requests could be dangerous, but Nehemiah asked for success and mercy, fully relying on God to make a way. This boldness is a reminder that we, too, can confidently approach God with our needs. Nehemiah’s example shows that after repentance and seeking alignment with God's will, we can pray boldly, asking for His favor and trusting that He will provide what we need.
Personalized Prayer Based on Nehemiah’s Prayer
Here’s a prayer inspired by Nehemiah’s example, which you can personalize to fit your own situation: "Great and awesome God, You are faithful and full of steadfast love. I come before You today, confessing my sins and the sins of my family and my community. Forgive us where we have failed to follow Your commands and guide us back to You.
Nehemiah's prayer serves as a timeless guide for how to approach God when we are burdened by personal or communal struggles. By following his example of humility, repentance, reliance on God’s promises, and boldness, we can learn to seek God's help in a way that honors Him and opens the door for His divine intervention in our lives.
How might Nehemiah’s approach to prayer—starting with repentance, recalling God’s promises, and boldly asking for His favor—shape the way you seek God’s help in your own challenges today?

I think I remember reading somewhere that there are 11 prayers in the book of Nehemiah. We trot out his story when there's a church building program or when we want to talk leadership, but I don't think he gets enough airtime as Nehemiah the Prayer Warrior!

You're absolutely right, Michele—Nehemiah truly was a prayer warrior! His story is often highlighted for leadership and rebuilding, but his deep reliance on prayer is a cornerstone of his journey. From his heartfelt prayer in chapter 1 to the many other moments he sought God’s guidance, Nehemiah exemplifies what it means to make prayer the foundation of action. It’s a reminder that prayer isn’t just a step in the process—it’s the engine driving it all. Thank you for pointing this out and celebrating Nehemiah’s powerful example of faith in action!

Just checked my sources: Not 11 prayers but 11% of Nehemiah is prayer. Someone is a true math geek to figure that one out! 1/14/2025 02:45:24 pm
I love how the Lord speaks! I am also going through the book of Nehemiah and sharing insights this month. However, as you know, the Bible is alive and speaks to us in different ways. I love seeing your insights on this. It is so true. I especially love the prayer at the end. Thanks for sharing!
