Jesus paints a beautiful picture clearly in Matthew 7:24–25. He tells us that the one who hears His words and does them is like a wise man who builds his house on the rock. Storms will come—winds will blow, rain will fall—but the house stands. Why? Because it is grounded.
Being grounded in God’s Word:
Without that foundation, we become easily shaken—led by circumstances, overwhelmed by fear and anxiety, and distracted by the noise around us. However, when we are rooted in Scripture, we begin to see life in a different light. We interpret our circumstances through truth, rather than trying to interpret truth through our circumstances. And when you are grounded in God's Word, you will find that gratitude flows from the truth of it. Gratitude is not just a personality trait—it is a spiritual posture. It's a choice. And, true, lasting gratitude is not rooted in what we have, but rather in what we know. When we are grounded in God’s Word, we are constantly reminded of:
The more we see who God is, the more gratitude naturally grows in and flows from our lives. Gratitude shifts our focus. Instead of dwelling on what is lacking, we begin to see what is already given. Instead of being consumed by what’s uncertain, we rest in what is unchanging. 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 calls us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Not because all circumstances are good—but because God is. Gratitude changes the way we live. When gratitude becomes a daily practice, it reshapes our hearts. Gratitude:
Gratitude doesn’t ignore hardships—it reframes them. A grateful heart says:
The connection between being grounded and being grateful is powerful! You cannot consistently live a life of gratitude if you are not regularly rooted in truth. Why? Because the world constantly pulls our focus toward dissatisfaction. It tells us:
But God’s Word tells us:
When you stay grounded in Scripture, it corrects your perspective daily. It reorients your heart. It reminds you of what is eternally true—no matter what you feel or face. And from that grounded place, gratitude becomes not forced, but natural.
So how do we live this out practically? How do we become grounded and grateful people? We start small. We stay consistent. We open God’s Word daily—even if it's just for a few minutes. We meditate on a single verse or passage of Scripture and carry it with us throughout our day. We ask questions like: “What does this show me about my God?” We respond with thanksgiving—turn what we read into a prayer.
You don’t need hours, friend. You need intention. Because over time, those small, faithful moments begin to root you deeply—and transform you quietly. Life will not always feel steady. Emotions will rise. Circumstances will shift. Questions will come. But when your life is grounded in God’s Word, you will not be easily shaken. And when your heart is anchored in truth, gratitude will grow—even in unexpected places. So today, choose to root yourself in His Word. Let truth steady you. Let gratitude shape you. And watch how God transforms not just your perspective—but your entire life.
If your sense of peace and gratitude were truly rooted in God’s unchanging Word rather than your changing circumstances, how might that transform the way you respond to both your hardest and your most joyful seasons?
