The Bible reveals that God is not only present with us in the new year—He is our shelter, our defense, and our foundation. Through His names, He shows us exactly who He will be for us in every season ahead. Let’s carry these names with us as we step into the year before us.
Jehovah Magen — The LORD My Shield
“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” Genesis 15:1 A new year often awakens new fears—fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of what might repeat itself. Into that fear, God speaks the same words He spoke to Abram: Do not be afraid. I am your shield. Jehovah Magen reminds us that God does not merely hand us protection—He becomes it. He stands between us and what would harm us. He absorbs what we were never meant to carry. As we move forward into uncharted days, we can rest knowing the Lord Himself surrounds us. This year, we do not walk exposed. We walk shielded. Jehovah Machseh — The LORD My Refuge “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 The year ahead may bring noise, pressure, and unexpected storms. But God promises to be our Machseh—our refuge, shelter, and hiding place. Jehovah Machseh is not distant or delayed. He is very present. He invites us to run to Him, not when life feels tidy, but when it feels overwhelming. In Him, we find a quiet place for our souls—a space where we can breathe, be honest, and be renewed. As you enter this new year, remember: you always have somewhere to go. His presence is your safe haven. Jehovah Tsuri — The LORD My Rock “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” Psalm 18:2 Everything around us may shift—circumstances, relationships, plans—but God does not move. Jehovah Tsuri reminds us that He is steady, faithful, and unchanging. As the year unfolds, we are not standing on fragile ground. We are standing on the Rock. When the winds blow and the waters rise, our lives remain secure because they are anchored in Him. This year, we don’t just run to God—we stand on Him—our Safe Place for the year ahead.
Together, these names form a promise we can carry into every day of the new year:
Friend, whatever this year holds, you already know where safety is found. You don’t have to predict the future or control the outcome. You only need to run to the One who has always been your safe place. He is your Shield. He is your Refuge. He is your Rock. And that is more than enough—today, tomorrow, and all year long.
As you step into this new year, which name of God do you find yourself needing to run to the most—Jehovah Magen, your Shield; Jehovah Machseh, your Refuge; or Jehovah Tsuri, your Rock—and how might trusting Him as your safe place reshape the way you face the days ahead?
