God has given me many ministry opportunities over the years, and one of those ministries was working in a museum of Christian art. Ironically my husband was the artist in our family; he taught art in Christian schools; and he even proposed marriage to me at an art museum.
When we moved to Greenville for my husband to pastor, our church congregation was small. To help with finances I began working at the Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University. I received a lot of art training, gave tours, and became captivated with everything art.
The M&G collection is made up of Old Master paintings, tapestries, etchings, stained glass, and even furniture. It was interesting to learn that each art form goes through a process for completion, and there are specific tools used to accomplish the final masterpiece.
As Christians Our Artist is God
A Fascinating Type of Artwork is Etching
Let’s look at how an etching is done as we think about God making us a masterpiece for His glory.
What process has God taken you through, and what specific tools has He used to mold you into a masterpiece of beautiful art for Him?
The hymn “Oh! to Be Like Thee” by Thomas O. Chisholm, published in 1897, was inspired and penned from these scripture verses II Corinthians 3:18 and I John 4:17.
Oh! to be like Thee, blessed Redeemer, This is my constant longing and prayer;
I especially love the line in the refrain, “Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.”
My prayer today, “Don’t just stamp it Lord, stamp it DEEP!” We need a deep stamping of His image on our hearts. Nothing superficial, something DEEP! Will you pray this prayer with me today?
The past, living there requires a tremendous cost. There are the "What ifs?" that plague our minds. The "wishing I'd done this and not that." Satan loves for us to go there. He likes it when we camp out there, set up shop there, build a residence there. It's one of the simplest tools in his toolbox to distract us from the good in the present.
There's an old song that reads:
Please, Mr., please, don't play B-17, It was our song, it was his song, but it's over.
If you are living in the past, with past regrets haunting you today, give them over to the Almighty God who loves you and forgives you and wants only the best for you. He has a plan to use those experiences for your good and His glory. It's a chapter in your story, not the whole book!
What Scripture verses do you go to when the past creeps up on you?
