8 Things Jesus Prays for Us in the High Priestly Prayer
1. That We Will Be Kept (John 17:11)
Jesus prays, “Holy Father, keep them in Your name…” Jesus asks the Father to preserve and protect those who belong to Him. He prays for our perseverance, that we may stay faithful and secure in God’s care. This prayer reflects the truth that it is God who holds us, and not our own strength or works that keep us in His grace. 2. That We Will Be One (John 17:11) “…that they may be one, even as We are one.” Jesus prays for unity among believers. His desire is that the Church would reflect the perfect oneness of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This unity isn’t just for the sake of harmony; it is a testimony to the world of God’s love and the truth of the Gospel (John 17:21). 3. That We Will Be Guarded (John 17:12) Jesus prays for our protection, saying, “While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them…” He specifically asks that the Father would protect us from the evil one (17:15). As we navigate a fallen world full of temptations and trials, Jesus’ prayer reminds us that we are never alone—God is actively guarding our hearts and minds. 4. That We Will Be Joy-Filled (John 17:13) “…that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.” Jesus desires that His followers experience the fullness of His joy. Even in the midst of suffering and persecution, we are invited to share in the divine joy that comes from a deep and abiding relationship with Christ. This joy is rooted not in circumstances but in our identity as children of God.
5. That We Will Be Sanctified (John 17:17)
Jesus prays, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” To be sanctified means to be set apart for holy purposes. Jesus prays that we would be continually transformed and made holy by God’s truth. The Word of God is the agent of our sanctification, molding us to become more like Christ as we grow in knowledge and obedience to His commands. 6. That We Will Be Sent (John 17:18) “As You sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” Just as Jesus was sent on a mission from the Father, we too are sent into the world to spread the Gospel. Our purpose is not to withdraw from the world but to be a light within it, carrying the message of salvation to those who are lost. 7. That We Will Be With Jesus (John 17:24) “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am…” Jesus expresses His longing for us to be with Him in eternity. This is a beautiful reminder of our eternal destiny. Jesus not only prays for our time on earth but also for our future, when we will be fully united with Him in the presence of the Father. 8. That We Will Be Filled with His Love (John 17:26) Finally, Jesus prays, “…that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” He desires that the same love the Father has for the Son would fill our hearts. This divine love is what empowers us to love others, fulfill the Great Commandment, and reflect God’s nature to the world.
Why Does Jesus Pray for These Things?
In John 17:23, Jesus gives the reason behind His prayers: “…so that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them even as You loved Me.” The ultimate purpose of Jesus’ intercession is that the world would recognize God’s love for us. When we live in unity, joy, sanctification, and love, the world sees a glimpse of the divine. Our lives, shaped by Jesus’ prayers, become a testimony to the truth of the Gospel.
The High Priestly Prayer is a powerful reminder of Jesus’ love and concern for His people. He prays not only for the disciples who walked with Him but for all believers throughout history—including you and me. These eight prayers reveal the heart of Jesus for His Church, and they remind us that even now, He is interceding for us at the right hand of the Father (Hebrews 7:25).
As we meditate on these prayers, let’s take comfort in the fact that the Son of God is praying for our unity, joy, protection, and sanctification. And as we walk in the truth of His prayers, may the world come to know the One who sent Him.
How might our lives look different if we truly embraced and lived out the unity, joy, and love that Jesus prayed for in His High Priestly Prayer, knowing that these qualities are meant to reflect God’s love to the world?
