8 Things Acts Teaches Us About the Holy Spirit

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25

The book of Acts is often called the Acts of the Apostles, but more accurately, it could be described as the Acts of the Holy Spirit through the Apostles.

​With over 50 references to the Holy Spirit, Acts gives us a powerful and vivid picture of how the Spirit of God operated in the early Church—and how He continues to work in and through believers today.

So today, let’s explore eight key truths about the Holy Spirit that the book of Acts teaches us.

1. The Holy Spirit Empowers Believers
   “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would empower His followers to proclaim the Gospel boldly. That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2) when the disciples were filled with the Spirit and began preaching in many languages. The Spirit gives us power, not for our own purposes, but for God’s mission.
   
   
2. The Holy Spirit Fills and Indwells Believers
   “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:4). The Spirit isn’t just an external force—it is God's presence dwelling within His people. This filling enables believers to speak, live, and minister with divine direction and power. He transforms ordinary people into bold witnesses for Christ.
   
   
3. The Holy Spirit Guides and Directs
   “And the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over and join this chariot’” (Acts 8:29). Throughout Acts, we see the Spirit giving clear and timely guidance. He directs Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8), calls Paul and Barnabas to the mission (Acts 13), and even prevents Paul from entering certain regions (Acts 16). The Holy Spirit is not passive—He leads believers step by step.

   “While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word” (Acts 10:44). The Spirit breaks down ethnic, cultural, and religious barriers.    “And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying” (Acts 19:6). The Holy Spirit equips believers with spiritual gifts—supernatural abilities that build up the Church and glorify God. These gifts are meant to edify and extend the body of Christ.

   “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’” (Acts 2:37). After Peter’s Spirit-empowered sermon at Pentecost, thousands were convicted and came to faith. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just stir emotions—He pierces hearts, bringing conviction, repentance, and transformation. Salvation is the Spirit’s ultimate goal.
   
   
7. The Holy Spirit Gives Boldness in Persecution
   “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders…’” (Acts 4:8). In the face of opposition and danger, the Holy Spirit gave the apostles courage. Peter, Stephen, and others spoke truth boldly, even when it cost them their lives. The Spirit emboldens us to stand firm for Christ, regardless of the cost.
   
   
8. The Holy Spirit Confirms the Gospel with Signs and Wonders
   “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles” (Acts 5:12). Miracles in Acts weren’t just for spectacle—they confirmed the truth of the Gospel. Healings, visions, and other supernatural events pointed people to Jesus and validated the message of salvation.

The book of Acts shows us that the Holy Spirit is not a passive bystander but the powerful presence of God actively working in the Church. He empowers, indwells, guides, convicts, unites, gifts, emboldens, and confirms. His work didn’t end in the first century—He is still moving today in every believer who surrenders to His leading.

Let us not try to do the work of God without the Spirit of God. May we, like the early Church, seek to walk in step with the Holy Spirit, fully dependent on Him in all we do.
