1. Turning Water into Wine (John 2:1-11)
Jesus' first recorded miracle took place at a wedding in Cana. When the hosts ran out of wine, Jesus instructed the servants to fill six stone jars with water, which He then miraculously turned into wine. This sign revealed His power over creation and symbolized the new covenant of grace, replacing the old order of the law. It also demonstrated His care for everyday human needs. 2. Healing the Royal Official’s Son (John 4:46-54) A royal official came to Jesus, pleading for the healing of his dying son. Without traveling to the official’s home, Jesus simply spoke the words, and the boy was healed at that very moment. This miracle underscores the power of Jesus’ word and the importance of faith—believing without seeing. 3. Healing the Paralyzed Man at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-15) At the Pool of Bethesda, Jesus encountered a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. With a simple command, Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk, instantly restoring his health. This sign pointed to Jesus as the true source of healing and spiritual restoration, challenging legalistic traditions that placed rules above compassion. 4. Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1-14) One of the most well-known miracles, Jesus took five loaves and two fish and multiplied them to feed a vast crowd. This act demonstrated His ability to provide abundantly, prefiguring Himself as the Bread of Life, who alone can satisfy the deepest spiritual hunger. 5. Walking on Water (John 6:16-21) In the midst of a stormy night, Jesus walked on the water toward His disciples. This miracle revealed His authority over nature and His divine presence, assuring His followers that He is with them even in the most turbulent moments of life. 6. Healing the Man Born Blind (John 9:1-12) A man blind from birth received his sight when Jesus applied mud to his eyes and instructed him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. More than a physical healing, this sign symbolized spiritual sight, contrasting those who recognize Jesus as the Light of the World with those who remain spiritually blind in unbelief. 7. Raising Lazarus from the Dead (John 11:1-44) Perhaps the most dramatic of the seven signs, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb. This miracle was a clear foreshadowing of Jesus’ own resurrection and demonstrated His power over death, affirming His identity as the Resurrection and the Life.
John’s Gospel presents these miracles not just as displays of power but as revelations of Jesus’ divine nature. Each sign points to a greater spiritual truth, inviting all who witness them—both in person and through Scripture—to believe in Him. As John 20:31 states, "These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." Through these signs, we are reminded that Jesus is more than a teacher or prophet—He is the Messiah, the Son of God, who brings salvation, healing, and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Which of the seven signs in the Gospel of John speaks to you the most, and how does it deepen your understanding of Jesus' divine authority?
