5 Ways Faith & Hope are Intertwined in Our Lives

2/18/2025

Faith and Hope create a powerful partnership! #Faith trusts in who #God is. #Hope confidently expects Him to fulfill His #promises. Together, they anchor our souls and sustain us through every #trial. Faith is the foundation of hope (Heb 11:1). Hope fuels perseverance in faith (Rom 8:24-25). Faith anchors hope in #Christ (Col 1:27). Hope strengthens faith during doubt (Ps 42:11). Both are rooted in God’s Word (Rom 15:4). Let’s explore how these two work together to shape our walk with Christ.
“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Romans 8:24-25
Hope and faith are deeply intertwined in the life of a Christian, working together to sustain and guide believers in their walk with God.

I like how Hebrews 11:1 is translated in the NIV, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

While faith and hope are distinct, they are also inseparable aspects of a vibrant spiritual life.

Today, let's look at how they connect.

Waiting for Hope | Malachi Bible Study
1. Faith is the Foundation of Hope
Faith gives birth to hope. Without faith, there can be no confident expectation of the future. Hebrews 11:1 captures this so beautifully:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
  • Faith trusts in God’s character and His promises.
  • Hope looks forward to their fulfillment, anchored in that trust.
A great biblical example of this truth is Abraham’s faith in God’s promise which led him to hope for the fulfillment of becoming the father of many nations (Romans 4:18-21).

2. Hope Fuels Perseverance in Faith
Hope gives us as believers the strength to keep on trusting in God’s plan—especially during times of trials and seasons of difficulty. Romans 8:24-25 says it beautifully: “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”
  • Faith assures us that God is working for our good and for His glory.
  • Hope keeps our eyes fixed on the eternal promises, motivating us to endure.
A biblical example of this is Paul’s faith in Christ which sustained him while his hope for eternal life gave him the courage to persevere (2 Timothy 4:6-8).

3. Faith Anchors Hope in Christ
Hope is not wishful thinking but confident expectation, and it is firmly anchored in faith in Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:27 calls this “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
  • Faith connects us to the saving work of Christ.
  • Hope reminds us of the eternal inheritance secured through Him.
Look to the biblical example of Peter, as he emphasizes this relationship, saying, “Through Him you believe in God… so that your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:21).

4. Hope Strengthens Faith During Doubt
When doubts arise (and they will), hope helps faith hold firm. Hope reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past, giving us confidence to trust Him even more in the present and in the future.
  • Hope focuses on God’s unchanging nature.
  • Faith takes the next step, trusting that He will fulfill His Word.
The biblical example of King David reminds us of how often he expressed hope in God to restore his faith during challenging times (Psalm 42:11).

5. Both Are Rooted in God’s Word
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), and hope is nurtured by meditating on His promises. Romans 15:4 tells us: “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
  • Faith believes in God’s promises as true.
  • Hope anticipates their fulfillment with joy and expectation.
This is why it is so important, friend, for us to be grounded in His Word, daily!
Faith and hope are inseparably linked. Faith trusts in who God is and what He has done. Hope confidently expects God to fulfill His promises. Together, they empower Christians to navigate life with assurance, courage, and joy, knowing that God is faithful. This partnership is beautifully captured in Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
How has hope strengthened your faith during a season of doubt or uncertainty in your life?

Living today in "Confident Expectation." Not just expectation, but as you point out, "Confident" expectation. What a good Father we have!

Amen, Maryleigh!! :) Confident expectation changes everything, doesn't it?! It’s not just wishful thinking—it’s a deep, deep trust in our good Father who always keeps His promises. So grateful for His faithfulness! Keep walking in that confident hope!

I, too, love that expressian "confident" hope. It does closely align with faith, which is being confident in what you do not see.

I am confident God's promises are true!

Amen, Jerralea! Confident hope is such a powerful expression of faith! Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. What a beautiful truth that we can stand firm on God's promises, knowing they are unshakable! Thank you for sharing your confidence in Him!
