We are always talking to ourselves. I love how pastor and author Paul David Tripp puts it,
“No one is more influential in your life than you are, because no one talks to you more than you do.” –Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands
The stories we tell ourselves hold incredible power over how we see and experience life.
Therefore, if our narratives are guided by our feelings or human wisdom, then we are likely to create a script that is distorted and unreliable. Without realizing it, we will twist the truth, overlook God’s presence, and steer our hearts away from the reality of who God is and what He is doing. After all, Proverbs 23:7 clearly tells us “for as [a man] thinks within himself, so is he.” In other words, the story that I continually rehearse is the one I will believe and live out. I may be the one talking to myself the most on any given day, but as a follower of Christ, I cannot be the one writing the story. God is the author, and if I have any hope of being a reliable narrator to my heart, then I must, as the Apostle Paul implores in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “take every thought captive.” In this passage, Paul impresses the spiritual battle for our minds. Our thoughts are not neutral— they directly shape how we feel, how we respond, and how we walk through life. This is why our hearts and minds must be informed by the infallible truth of God’s Word rather than by our shifting feelings or limited understanding. So, how do we do this? How do we take captive our faulty thoughts and emotions and be led by Spirit-filled ones instead?
Whether you’re naturally chatty with people or normally more quiet and reserved, one thing is certain: we are all constantly carrying on a conversation with ourselves. Every thought, worry, hope, and anxiety is filtered through the dialogue we carry in our minds. Through it, we interpret our experiences and make sense of our world. These narratives we rehearse influence our obedience, the way we interact with and treat others, and our spiritual growth. As believers, God invites us to bring our restless thoughts and feelings to Him — to allow the light of His Word to expose, correct, and inform not only what we think and feel but how we think and feel.
Are your feelings writing stories about your current circumstances that go against God’s Word and rob you of your peace? Is your mind meditating on truths that reflect the unchanging character of God, or are they shaped by your own doubts and fears? Are you taking time each day to remind yourself of who you are in Christ? If not, friend, return to the Word of God. The more you dwell in His truth, the more it pushes out the lies, restores your peace, and helps you live with hope and confidence — anchored in Him. Let His promises remind you of who He is, what He has done, and the story He is writing for you.
If the stories you tell yourself shape your heart and actions, what lies might you be believing, and how would your life change if every thought were aligned with God’s truth?
