4 Things to Do When Our Thoughts Don’t Tell the Truth

4/3/2026

Struggling with overthinking or negative self-talk? Our latest blog, 4 Things to Do When Our Thoughts Don’t Tell the Truth, offers practical, Scripture-based guidance for taking every thought captive. Learn to scrutinize your thoughts against God’s Word, replace lies with truth, pray with dependence, and dwell on what is good. Discover how aligning your mind with Scripture brings peace, transforms your mindset, and strengthens your walk with Christ.
I’ll be the first to admit—I’m an over-thinker. It’s easy for me to get stuck in my own head, replaying conversations, interpreting situations, and second-guessing the choices I’ve made. I tend to analyze and rethink every detail, weighing outcomes, sorting everything into semi-neat categories, and trying to map out what I think is the “right” way forward.

But over time, the Lord has begun to show me what lies beneath all of that. So much of I attempt to take control of what feels uncertain—to hold it together, to figure it out on my own, to soothe my fear and anxiety by organizing everything in my mind.

The ironic thing is that all this self-talk or storytelling I do does just the opposite. For all the effort, it doesn’t bring the peace I’m looking for. Instead, it keeps me striving and circling the same thoughts and narratives in my mind.

Thirty Truths for Common Lies Card Set
We are always talking to ourselves. I love how pastor and author Paul David Tripp puts it,
“No one is more influential in your life than you are, because no one talks to you more than you do.” –Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands
The stories we tell ourselves hold incredible power over how we see and experience life.

Therefore, if our narratives are guided by our feelings or human wisdom, then we are likely to create a script that is distorted and unreliable. Without realizing it, we will twist the truth, overlook God’s presence, and steer our hearts away from the reality of who God is and what He is doing.

After all, Proverbs 23:7 clearly tells us “for as [a man] thinks within himself, so is he.” In other words, the story that I continually rehearse is the one I will believe and live out. I may be the one talking to myself the most on any given day, but as a follower of Christ, I cannot be the one writing the story.

God is the author, and if I have any hope of being a reliable narrator to my heart, then I must, as the Apostle Paul implores in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “take every thought captive.”

In this passage, Paul impresses the spiritual battle for our minds. Our thoughts are not neutral— they directly shape how we feel, how we respond, and how we walk through life. This is why our hearts and minds must be informed by the infallible truth of God’s Word rather than by our shifting feelings or limited understanding.

So, how do we do this? How do we take captive our faulty thoughts and emotions and be led by Spirit-filled ones instead?
  1. Scrutinize your thoughts against the Word.
In 1 John 4:1, the apostle tells believers, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” While this speaks directly to the issue of false teachers, we can certainly use its wisdom for our own thoughts as well. Just like false prophets teach what is contrary to the truth of Scripture, we too can find ourselves preaching to our own hearts in ways that don’t align with God’s Word.

We become the voice of our own deception, repeating thoughts that sound convincing but are not grounded in truth. We tell ourselves that our circumstances are unfair, that God has somehow overlooked or abandoned us. We begin to believe that we are alone in what we’re facing. We excuse worry, anxiety, and doubt as permissible. At times, we may even justify our sinful responses—convincing ourselves that our reactions are reasonable, that our attitudes are warranted, or that our choices make sense given what we’ve been through.

This is why John urges us to “test every spirit”—not just some, not just the obvious ones, but every single one. True wisdom submits every thought and feeling to the infallible Word of God. God doesn’t want us to be overthinkers, but He does call us to scrutinize our thoughts, feelings, and ideas under the microscope of His Word. This requires us to be attentive and discerning. It draws us into God’s Word, inviting us to know it deeply and consistently. It forces us to slow down long enough to ask, “Is this actually true? Am I thinking about this rightly? Does this align with who God is and what He has said?”

I appreciate how John Piper sums up this principle. “We submit everything we think — all our ideas, all our worldview, all our viewpoints — to God, and we say, ‘Let your word dismantle me if necessary.’” I have found that when I do this, I have grown in discernment. I’m no longer tossed around by every passing thought or emotion but rather steadily anchored in what is sure. And over time, my heart and mind are shaped—not by what feels right in the moment—but by the faithful, unchanging truth of God.

  2. Replace error with truth.
We can come to a place where we recognize the lies we’ve been believing, but if we don’t intentionally replace them by returning to and rehearsing what is true, we’re missing a vital step. It’s not enough to simply name what isn’t true. We need to fill that space with what is true, allowing it to take root in our hearts.

A great example of this in the Bible is the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4). After 40 days and nights of fasting, Satan comes to Jesus while He is physically vulnerable and twists Scripture to tempt Him into sin.

Jesus doesn’t merely label Satan as a liar. Instead, He counters every deception with the truth of God’s Word. He confronts Satan’s lies and replaces them with the reality of God’s promises. Jesus trusted fully in God’s Word to remain obedient. In the end, the devil left Him, and Jesus emerged faithful, showing us what it looks like to stand firm in truth even in the midst of testing.

God calls us to do the same in our own lives. When lies from the world—or even the subtle, sneaky doubts in our own hearts—start creeping in, we need to replace them with His truth.

  3. Depend on the Lord through prayer.
All too often, I have been guilty of making prayer a last resort instead of my first action. I rush ahead with my own plans or solutions. I stew in worry or frustration. I wear myself out wrestling with problems and anxieties. It’s only when I am completely undone that I think to pray, as if it’s the last thing I should try instead of the first.

But prayer is not my last line of defense— it is my greatest weapon. Through prayer, I have direct access to God Himself, and I can come boldly before Him asking for intercession, wisdom, strength, and more.

Not only do I need to hold the stories I tell myself up to the truth of God’s Word, but I also need to take them to God in prayer. I need to ask Him to dismantle the lies in my heart and help retrain my thoughts to focus on what’s true.

Prayer is so much more than just words. It is a declaration of total dependence on God. When my thoughts and feelings overwhelm me, and I cannot make sense of what is true, my first impulse ought to be to cling to God in prayer. In this place of surrender, God’s Spirit sustains me, renews my mind, and steadies my heart. Prayer reminds me that I'm not alone, and I don't have to rely on my understanding. True strength, guidance, and peace come only from Him.

  4. Dwell on what is good.
If I really want to transform the way I think and talk to myself, then I must intentionally preach truth to my heart. Here’s a small sample of what Scripture has to say about this:
  • “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:13
  • “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3
  • “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
  • “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what the will of God is, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

The Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, wrote, “The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.” In other words, we will become what we think about the most. If we’re dwelling on the lies of this world or the whispers of our own sinful hearts, those deceptions will shape the way we see ourselves, others, and even God.

Our steady diet must be the truth of God’s Word. It cannot be occasional or secondary; it must be the loudest, clearest, and most consistent voice in our lives — rightly informing our thoughts, feelings, and actions. When God’s truth saturates our hearts, it becomes the lens through which we interpret our circumstances, the standard by which we evaluate our choices, and the foundation on which we build our lives. In short, Scripture becomes the primary authority that shapes the stories we allow into our hearts.
Whether you’re naturally chatty with people or normally more quiet and reserved, one thing is certain: we are all constantly carrying on a conversation with ourselves. Every thought, worry, hope, and anxiety is filtered through the dialogue we carry in our minds. Through it, we interpret our experiences and make sense of our world. These narratives we rehearse influence our obedience, the way we interact with and treat others, and our spiritual growth. As believers, God invites us to bring our restless thoughts and feelings to Him — to allow the light of His Word to expose, correct, and inform not only what we think and feel but how we think and feel.

Are your feelings writing stories about your current circumstances that go against God’s Word and rob you of your peace? Is your mind meditating on truths that reflect the unchanging character of God, or are they shaped by your own doubts and fears? Are you taking time each day to remind yourself of who you are in Christ? If not, friend, return to the Word of God. The more you dwell in His truth, the more it pushes out the lies, restores your peace, and helps you live with hope and confidence — anchored in Him. Let His promises remind you of who He is, what He has done, and the story He is writing for you.

If the stories you tell yourself shape your heart and actions, what lies might you be believing, and how would your life change if every thought were aligned with God’s truth?
