Add to all of this a plentiful supply of high-quality resources for families to choose from, and you can easily see why homeschooling has and continues to grow in popularity!
Last month, when I wrote about 5 Common Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Homeschool Experience, I promised to share some of my favorite resources with you. I hope that what I share with you here will be incredibly useful to you, especially if you are beginning your homeschool journey or curiously considering it! As I write this, my daughter and I are wrapping up our third year of homeschooling. We started with pre-K, then K-5, and this year we’ve had a very rewarding 1st grade experience. So, while I am still a beginner as a homeschool mom, I have definitely learned a lot and been given helpful guidance that I would love to share with you! In this post, I want to share with you my favorite tools and resources for homeschooling. I’m sure there are many of you who are also curious about the curriculum. Never fear! I will be dedicating an entire post to that in June!
1. HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association)
The HSLDA is a non-profit advocacy group whose mission is to protect and promote the constitutional freedoms of parents to guide and direct the education of their child. If you are at all considering homeschooling for your family, consulting the HSLDA is a must. On their website, you will find educational resources, financial assistance, and information regarding your state’s laws in regard to homeschooling. Laws differ from state to state, especially as they pertain to the amount of government oversight and what is required of parents as proof of due diligence. The HSLDA can answer any questions you may have about records you must keep and what you must report. Additionally, the HSLDA is a legal advocate for homeschooling families. They offer consultations and representation when needed and also actively work to track and influence legislation that promotes homeschooling freedom. Practically any question you might have regarding homeschooling, they will have an answer for it! They provide information for record keeping, testing and evaluation, special needs, grading, assessment metrics, and much more. Additionally, they also have an online academy with coursework for students from grades 7-12. Check them out at hslda.org and on Instagram @hslda.
2. IXL
IXL is an online learning platform for K-12 education, covering subjects like math, language arts, science, and social studies. It's designed to help students practice skills and track their progress. The appeal of homeschooling is that it offers parents a structured and adaptable way to learn and master skills, while also tracking their progress. It is an excellent supplement to enhance any curriculum and reinforce concepts.
3. Education.com
Similar to IXL, education.com offers a wide range of educational resources for children in pre-K through 8th grade. The site provides worksheets, games, guided lessons, activities, and teacher resources, too. There are both printable and online interactive worksheets that help parents save time and make learning fun for students! I’ve used this website for a couple of years as a supplement to our curriculum when I feel my daughter needs more practice in an area. Another way Education.com has been a useful tool for me is that I can use it for end-of-year assessment content. In Hawai’i, state law requires parents to provide documentation that their child is ready to move on to the next grade. Last year, I used the End of Year Assessment worksheets for Kindergarten to serve as proof that our daughter had met all the necessary requirements. It was a simple and very cost-effective way to complete what our state requires. In total, Education.com has a vast library of 36,000+ digital resources and 30+ games. The cost to have full access is minimal — only $5 a month for an annual subscription, or you can pay on a month-by-month basis at a rate of $8 per month.
These resources have been incredibly useful to me over the last 3 years and have also given me many ideas for how I plan to educate my daughter at home over the next few years. Homeschooling can seem overwhelming at the outset, but we have so many tools and resources available to us in addition to a vast community of other like-minded parents and content creators who can walk this journey with us. I hope you will check out these resources for yourself, and please comment below if you have others you feel should be added to the list.
Also, please check in next month as I share my favorite curricula!
What if the key to a successful homeschool journey isn’t just the curriculum you choose, but the community and resources you surround yourself with?
